What is our goal?
Art philanthropy might sound like a great thing: After all, the arts are a cultural good that everyone can benefit from... right? Yet, in its current state, the art market in the Netherlands is a legal grey area and opens the door to money laundering, tax avoidance, and tax evasion. Art appraisal has no clear standard, code of conduct or ethical guidelines. This can be abused by super-rich individuals as it allows an artwork to be valued at either a low value (to avoid taxes) or high value (to achieve the highest selling price).
Our project offers an insight into the workings of the art market, especially private museums and privately-owned foundations, to map out relevant stakeholders. This overview will allow the tax office to get a better understanding of the workings of the art world and help track further developments in the art world.
