Alina had a more genuine connection with the Darkling and Nikolai than with Mal.

But she chose Mal, because in her opinion; The Darkling, despite being the only one like her had gone too far. And because, without her powers, she no longer felt useful objectively to Nikolai.

Also, for me, Alina felt guilty about still wanting the Darkling despite everything that had happened, and since Nikolai reminded her of the Darkling in some ways, being with him wouldn't have helped her with her guilt related to the Darkling. Whereas Mal, although really related by blood to the Darkling, did not remind Alina of the Darkling in terms of personality.

And, I think Alina in part rejected Nikolai out of guilt towards Mal, because she has always spent the story caring more about Mal's emotions and desires than her own. So she preferred to choose Mal for the sake of convenience rather than actively helping Ravka politically alongside Nikolai, whom she also partly really appreciated.

It's my opinion.

She must have been a breath of fresh air for him in comparison to the cunning political games and serious and grim reality of the court life and the world in general that he had so much gotten used to.

Funny how LB started claiming in recent years that Darklina was abusive (I mean it was toxic, but not for the reasons she says) and that she'd never write an abusive relationship (she has made Malina endgame), but then goes and makes her every other relationship outside of Grishaverse a Darklina ripoff. In Ninth House - Darlington and Alex Stern: A dignified intimidating gentleman and a scrappy scrawny young woman who feels like she doesn't belong in an elite establishment. Gee, I wonder if those names remind me of anyone, hmm. And apparently, in her newest book the Familiar, she attempted a Darklina copy again. She fanned Darklina flames when S&B trilogy had just come out and was very ecstatic about Darklina. Then around the time when "Shadow Daddy" trope and "YA FMC was manipulated" shtick started gaining popularity, Darklina became a staple for abusive relationships. Correct me if I'm getting the timeline wrong, but either way it's like she didn't dig further to analyze her own writing and simply decided to drop it before she got labeled to be "promoting problematic relationships" in her books. But she sure milked it and continues to milk Darklina, its vibes and reminiscence for all its worth. She wrote it and can do whatever she wants with it, but doing the same thing in not two, but three different book series set in three different universes is just peak lazy writing. "Darklina was horrible and shouldn't even be considered a relationship" - not even the author herself can come up with an idea how write a better relationship and keeps doing the same one over and over. Can't wait until I see a Kanej ripoff too...Oh wait, that was Zoyalai.

That woman really fell prey to her purist fans. So she had to change her tune about how Darkling was totally, inclusively abusive and no fun at all.

And she clearly profits from Darklina and its dynamic for money (and therefore copies it in her every book). It's a popular trope so why not? Who has the time to spend it on writing about something different? Easy cash.

Look let's face it. That woman is a hypocrite and has the spine of a gingerbread man. So it's no wonder that most of her characters are like that as well. I would highly respect an author who sticks with his/her opinions and writing choices than someone who wavers every now and then because she's afraid of her own fanbase.

What I understood from this post is that some Darkling fans want to ship the Darkling with themselves, right? So why do they keep using the Darklina hashtag if deep down they don't want them to end up together? Personally, deep down I really wanted Alina to go with the Darkling. And it's obvious that fans are frustrated with Alina because she didn’t reach the emotional maturity she needed to. Honestly, I’m kind of confused now. You always post Darklina content (from them not having children to deep relationship analysis), so do you truly ship them from the bottom of your heart? Or do you secretly want the Darkling for yourself? If you ask me, I’ve loved their ship from the very beginning—even before I started reading the books. 😂😭

What I meant with my post is that some people want the Darkling to stay single and take care of himself rather than end up with Alina. Which I don't blame them at all! He has been through too much.

As for me yes, I do ship them. I just love their dynamic and seeing them suffering because of it. C'mon. Who doesn't want even a little bit to see their favorite character suffering? I sure like to ponder what would happen between them if Alina was a much more mature and logical person. But their canon story is pretty enjoyable to me. Even after getting resurrected Aleksander was thinking about her and Alina was trying to get his smell at his bedroom and she never changed the sheets. 🙃
