When YoSD Little Alice came out in 2010, I was totally smitten. I had a chance to adopt her when someone in my local bjd community put hers up for sale. She requested for personal payment, and for the currency to be in JPY as she was planning for a Japan trip and needed the funds. I did as she asked because she was extremely well known and active in the community. I even double confirmed that she wanted the amount in JPY instead of USD.
A day before she was supposed to meet me to pass me the doll, she texted and requested for an extra $50 because she didn’t like the “currency conversion” of paypal, and said that she would not hand the doll over unless I paid. I pleaded and offered an extra $25 even though it had been her choice to accept payment in JPY. She refused, and I had to threaten to go to the police before she would refund me in full.
The funny thing was, because I had used personal payment, I was already paying extra to cover paypal fees, on top of the original price of the doll. As there was no refund option, in order to refund me, she had to use personal payment to pay me the full amount that I had sent her (including fees), plus the fees for that payment. The double fees she paid in total were higher than the $50 she had requested, and I still fail to understand why she did not just accept the $25 I had offered.
She then sold the doll for the original price she had asked me for 🤷🏻♀️ Till now I still feel a twinge whenever I see Little Alice, but I could never bring myself to try to adopt one.
