Just a little rant!
I’m a sucker for Disney musicals and Disney original shows and the classic Disney movies. But I have to address something. Hades is my favorite all time Disney character in Hercules. And I was so excited to hear a version of that Disney Hades was being brought into Descendants 3. Cheyenne Jackson nailed it!!! He was so fabulous and Hades became my all time favorite Disney parent in a matter of minutes. But many fans have started to complain about Persephone erasure by making Maleficent Hades wife/ex wife instead. These fans who see Persephone and Hades as this romantic tale don’t seem to know the origins of the Greek mythical romance. Other than how we got the seasons. There’s different variations of the tale but all of them dark and sad. Persephone was the daughter of Zeus. Hades is the brother of Zeus. Hades wanted a bride so Zeus arranged for his own child to marry her uncle. When Persephone refused to do so Hades kidnapped her and forced her to be his wife. Some versions of the story include rape and abuse. But either way there was nothing rainbow and sunshine about Hades and his bride. Disney is a family friendly company. They are in no way obligated to support such dark themes or try to find a way to bring in Persephone and change the tale enough to be suitable for kids. So they left her out of the animated film Hercules. And Hades was single and bitter. In a Mickey Mouse house of mouse short Hades goes on a date with Maleficent. And since Cheyenne’s Hades is loosely based on the animated one voiced by James Woods, it would make sense for this pairing to return. If you like Persephone and Hades tale then that’s up to you. To each their own. But don’t expect Disney to bring such problematic and toxic themes to their movies or shows. This isn’t D.C. Comics. Bringing that marriage into a Disney movie would be like if The Joker and Harley took the Disney universe over. It just doesn’t work.
