Cat problems #2

Cat owners, I need your help, please.
We have two cats, both neutered males, one is almost a year old and the other one approximately half a year (he’s just been neutered a week ago). They actually get along really well, but they’ve started to pee in corners, often very close one of their litter boxes (we have two -- I know there should always be one more box than there are cats, but we haven’t had the time to buy a third one yet). My mother gets incredibly mad about this and she just threatened to give both cats away if they do not stop peeing outside their boxes and I really don’t know if she means it or if she just said that because she was in a hurry and pretty overwhelmed by the whole situation that has just occured. Since I do not want to risk anything, I’m asking for your help. I’m desperate beyond compare. I love both of them so much, and as cheesy as it probably sounds, the bond between the younger cat and me really means a lot to me. He’s incredibly cuddly, playful, he really seems to love me and during depressed phases, he’s often the one who makes me feel better again. I don’t want to lose them so I’d like to ask you if you have any advice for me how to make them stop peeing or if you know whether this will take a few weeks or so until the older cat will get used to the younger one’s smell (I don’t know if that’s the reason why they’re doing this). So please, if anyone of you has any idea what to do, I’d be grateful for any kind of advice. Thanks in advance! Edit: She just said that she does not want to give them away, either, and the was just mad about the situation, but still, I’d be really thankful for advice. I don’t want her to change her mind. :(
