Buncheong ware / Flattened bottle with sgraffiato decoration of lotus flower and fish / 15th century / Joseon period / Horim Museum, Korea / The Sgraffito design of buncheong wares is achieved by first coating the surface with white slip, and then carving out the background areas surrounding the motifs, creating a striking contrast between the white slip and the blue-gray clay body. The patterns of this bottle are bold, poetic and dreamlike as well as showy, I think.
