I just wanted to take a moment, to put out a public service announcement. It's our responsibility to educate the public about what we do. It's a little long but worth the read and I will explain our sanitation process for you in it- so please read! There have been a lot of people recently getting tattooed in houses or garages (outside of a shop, basically) and we've seen a lot of messes walking around and being posted online. Just because someone has gotten tattoo equipment and has set up a "shop" in their house- DOES NOT make them professional. Just because they say they are registered or licensed DOES NOT mean they are. We know this because the Health Department does not register "home studio's" or "Mobile setups". You may be getting a cheap tattoo but consider the risk you are taking with your own health, let alone the inexperience of nearly every kitchen magician who will leave you needing touch ups, cover ups or removals if your lucky enough to dodge staff infections, hepatitis, HIV, or any other number of communicable diseases that are out there. You need to know that you are taking a huge risk that could effect your entire life because you were looking to get a deal.
When you get tattooed at a real shop, by a real tattooer, you know you are protected on multiple levels. We are highly regulated by the county and state laws, we are held to a standard that is just as high up there as dr.'s offices and dentists (though we at The Upper Room go above and beyond that). Our autoclave is the same kind you would find in a dentists office or dr.'s or hospital, it is monitored monthly as well as with each and every cycle of sterilization. Our tools (tubes) are first soaked in a cold sterile solution that kills all blood borne and airborne pathogens, then thoroughly scrubbed, cleaned and then bagged with the date, lot number and initials of the person who is running the cycle. We run our cycle at a hotter temperature, for a longer period of time than what is actually needed to fully sterilize the tubes we use. Not only do our bags have indicators to show they are sterilized properly but we have indicators that are separately placed into each cycle to make sure our autoclave is functioning to its very best and that we have reached the temperature and PRESSURE needed to kill all organisms. Our needles are single use ONLY and we go through medical waste haulers to dispose of our sharps. We use surgical grade soaps for ourselves and our clients, we also use sterilization and sanitation products that kill any form of communicable disease out there before and after each client. We cut no corners. We also go through 8 hours of on-site training yearly to maintain OSHA compliance. We go through Blood Borne Pathogen training, yearly renewing our BBP Licensing as well. We also pay a large operator fee to be Licensed in this county. (There is no such thing as licensing for the whole state).
There's no saying that about someone working out of their house. There is no substitute for legitimate, professional, apprenticed, trained and legally registered with the county tattoo shops and artists within those shops. Use your best judgement when selecting your artist, you need the person with the most experience in doing the style you want and make sure you research them.
Sorry for the long rant… but I just feel there is so much the public does not know- and you deserve to know for your safety! Thanks for hearing us out! Get tattooed responsibly! We're here for you, for a reason and we are always willing to work with you if you are on a budget! Don't let finances send you into the wrong hands!
