Thinking about the Masks in Viva Pinata
Everyone has them, everyone wears them constantly, and yeah it could just be "what's in" in a fashion way, but I like to imagine them as something more, the mask you choose to wear is your face, your identiy, you, and the face underneath must be incredibly personal too.
I also think how big it is that the masks aren't even something that Professor Pester touches. He has one of his own, but if that's the culture then that makes sense.
Being the shameless monster that he is, it would be so easy for him to choose to break someone's mask (we know they're breakable as Seedos mentions it), and given that we see Leafos and Seedos wander into your garden it would be conceivable for Pester to be an asshole, run over, and crack someone's mask in.
Now gamewise, this probably wasn't done because of the animation and extra work for something that probably won't do anything except scare of Leafos or Seedos.
BUT STORY WISE!!!!! STORY WISE, PEOPLE! Imagine if a mask is something so sacred, so important that even someone like Professor Pester could see breaking it as "too far"
