The way I imagine it, half the reviews are "he expects you to participate in his classes; if you do that, it's an easy A", and the other half are "this guy gives you insanely big projects that he grades harshly and he talks like a vacuum cleaner. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. YOUR GPA WILL THANK YOU."
