[ CHANGBIN ] Seo Changbin (118, appears 22) is a time cursed human. Time curses are extremely rare but not immediately dangerous. Essentially it's a form of immortality in which the person is unable to age or move forward. The particulars of this curse aren't well known, thus it's hard to release the target from it. Curses are not the same as spells. A curse does not require magic to be cast, nor does it require an inscription or chant. Curses, at their base, are an amalgamation of thought and feeling. They consume something of the target, time in Changbin's case. The object or concept consumed is usually finite so the curse will also consume the object or concept from things or people around the target. Thus Changbin tries not to get too close to humans and sticks to mostly supernatural type companions who have significantly more time allotted to them. Even then he is hesitant to be around too long.

[ HYUNJIN ] Hwang Hyunjin (21) is a fae blessed human. Fae don't particularly like humans so to come across one is rare enough, but a blessing is even rarer. Similar to curses, blessings are not spells and therefore cannot be broken or altered by spells. Unlike curses however, blessing can be altered by anyone with a similar "source", meaning another fae could alter or interfere Hyunjin's blessing but non-fae cannot. Also unlike curses, blessings are not based in feelings or thoughts, but rather a sharing of sorts. Hyunjin is loosely tied to the fae that blessed him. The fae can sense Hyunjin's position on earth and can influence his blessing to be stronger or weaker as necessary. Hyunjin in return can sense when the fae is in trouble and "return" some blessing to allow the fae to use more strength. It's a very give and take relationship. Hyunjin's blessing in particular is spatial, meaning he has more awareness of objects in his surroundings and how his body is positioned. It's very helpful in his occupation as a dancer.

[ SEUNGMIN ] Kim Seungmin (400+, appears 21) is a ghost (not to be confused with ghoul). Although he's dead, Seungmin is still fairly corporeal, that most supernatural creatures with even a weak affinity can see and sense him. He can still interact with most objects on earth. The few objects he can't interact with tend to be imbued with some type of magic. He's not terribly upset about being dead frankly, especially since now he has infinite time to read and study and wander. He's an explorer at heart and will vanish for days or weeks on end, only to come back and reveal he was wandering a mountain in Brazil or a pier in Italy. Seungmin's existence is a bit curious because normally ghosts are tied to earth due to some kind of regret, known as an impediment. However, despite remembering his time alive, he doesn't remember what his impediment could be and therefore has no means of resolving it.

[ JEONGIN ] Yang Jeongin (20) is a half human-half fox shifter. Due to his nature, he's the most elusive of the bunch and it's very difficult to pinpoint exactly where he is at any given moment. Hyunjin and Felix can all give vague areas he's in due to their abilities. Jeongin is a trader, with strong ties to The Market on both the human and supernatural level. He is the one that can source the most rare poisons and gems, for the right price of course. Though he is a shrewd trader to most, he is lenient towards the rest of the SKZ boys because they've each helped him in the past. As a half shifter, he doesn't have a complete shifter form. The most he can get to is an odd three-quarters form, which he rarely pulls out unless threatened. In that form, he is faster and stronger but also looks... Well, monstrous may not be the wrong word. He can also pull out a half and quarter form, which are simply lesser transformed forms. Even in his human state, his eyes are lined with red.

[ Backstory ] Although born from a supposedly taboo relationship, Felix was loved and cherished by both parents. They were expelled from their covens when discovered but managed to form their own slightly lopsided coven, in which the light side was more powerful. Thus Felix grew up with more light magic influence. Despite this, his dark magic is still incredibly powerful, and combined together, he is one of the most powerful witches in his area. He prefers to downplay his magic significantly so people don't try to attack him for it. Felix moves less frequently than might be expected but he doesn't tend to stay in the same area for over a year. It's almost an annual ritual for him to pack up and hop to the next place, Minho in tow. It's not well known how he and Minho met or why they stick together like glue.

Mixed witches are often born from bastard relationships between light and dark witches. They are very rare, but not unheard of. Because of their relationship to both sides, they are often covenless and wander alone. Light covens reject them for their connection to the unnatural magic while dark covens cannot handle the weight of light magic. Felix has been covenless since he left home and he doesn't mind it. Because of this mixture, humans also tend to stay away though they treat mixed witches more similar to light witches than dark, unless something provokes them otherwise.

Mixed witches do not often entangle themselves in the matters of others either, choosing to live and stay alone. They can form surface level ties easily but since they are often rejected, they develop instincts on when it's time to move and will vanish without a trace until they've popped up somewhere else. To earn a mixed witch's trust is difficult but not impossible, as they too are merely human in their emotional control. However they tend to attract the attention of other supernatural beings easily, from other witches to shifters to sirens and more. Because of their unique situation, they can lend a helping hand to nearly anyone.

Dark magic is tied specifically to ritual while light magic is not. Because it goes against the flow of life, dark magic can be seen as disruptive and callous, difficult to handle. While light magic can be used without particular ritual sigils or motions, dark magic is almost always channeled through markings. One way to think of it is that light magic is like cooking, where there's no precise measurements while dark magic is like baking, where any deviation can change the outcome significantly. Dark magic rituals aren't exactly like blood rituals or sacrifices, though those may be used for extreme spells.

[ Backstory ] As the distant many times great grandson of a transformed siren, Jisung has always been drawn to sound and the power innately woven into it. The charm that flows in his blood is significantly diluted compared to the original but it's still present and actually rather strong given the circumstances. Jisung was a complete and utter chatterbox as a youth, a trait he has retained in his adult years. Due to his lineage, he can sense magic like a tingle on his skin and has a slight hint of his family’s melodic allure but besides these traits, he is entirely human and incapable of doing anything magical. Also due to his lineage he has some Knowledge (tm) but it's mostly restricted to sirens/merfolk and then common fact (like vampires and sunlight).

[ Additional information ]

Sirens are not to be confused with merfolk. Thought they appear similarly, there are a few key differences. Sirens appear more human like, lacking gill flaps or webbed fingers. Their tales are powerful but cannot match up to merfolk. Siren skin is often freckled and non-scaley while merfolk skin is more similar to fish skin. Merfolk are also bioluminescent and are often more brightly colored than sirens, who favor darker colors similar to rocks. Sirens do not eat meat while merfolk do. Another key difference is that sirens spend much of their time on the surface, lounging on rocks or on beaches and swimming close to the surface (sunlight zones). Because they lack gill flaps, they are not able to breathe underwater but can hold their breath for a shockingly long time. Merfolk on the other hand tend to stay underwater near permanently, and rarely surfacing unless seeking something very specific. They cannot survive on land in any capacity.

The most particular difference is that sirens have human voices while merfolk do not. Merfolk communicate using echolocation and other pitched sounds, while sirens use sign language because their vocal cords produce garbled sounds underwater. Above water, sirens call to each other similar to humans and have their own language, called nesai. Nesai is said to be melodic and endearing, charming to a degree that feels nearly undeniable. Sirens do not try to lure humans, but in their joy, they will exude an uncontrollable charm that has brought many ships to wreckage.

Sirens are able to give up their supernatural status and become human but there are three requirements. First, the siren must have a tie to land, often a human companion that they have formed a deep connection with. This tie is the "anchor" that will keep the siren from halting the transformation process halfway. If the tie is weak, there is a greater chance the transformation will fail. Second, the siren must give up their voice. They become mute upon becoming human, unable to communicate in nesai or human language. Their vocal cords are physically functional so there is no difficulty swallowing but magic prevents sound from forming. Finally, there must be a power source, often in the form of sacrifice. The magic required to transform is enormous. Powerful dark witches can be called upon to use their magic in place of the sacrifice, but finding a witch willing to perform the spell is difficult.

After transforming, the former siren is unable to speak but their offspring acquire their melodic vocal charm, albeit slightly diluted. The charm can manifest in many ways but it often simply defaults to making the offspring extremely endearing and sweet to be around. Even when combative or distressed, they exude an off color cheerfulness that is hard to get rid of completely. Essentially, all those near them feel endeared to them and inclined to favor the siren offspring, regardless of what's happening.

Vampires are not well liked in this world. They're even less liked than witches, but because of their dependency on blood for sustenance, they walk a fine balance between humanity and otherness. Vampires possess weaknesses that are dependent on the sire and the vampire's internal inclinations. For example, some are weak to certain sounds while others can't stand to be near places of adoration. Unlike common belief, vampires are not weak to garlic, wooden stakes, or religious paraphernalia. All vampires are weak to sunlight, which is deadly and will burn them (but not to ashes). Simply covering up or hiding in the shade is not enough to protect them.

Vampires are almost inseparable from humans directly after feeding. As time goes on, they appear less and less human as their hunger takes over. Fresh born vampires are insatiable and often go on rampages unless controlled by their sire or by another magic being of greater power. After a decade or two, they can usually control themselves, but be wary of any on the brink of their hunger as they're prone to lose control easier. At his age, Minho is in full control of his hunger and it affects him similar to a human, except his hunger will eat him alive quicker and thus he feeds a bit more frequently.

One can often tell how recently a vampire has fed based on the pallor of their skin as well as the color of their eyes. Recently fed vampires have vibrantly colored eyes, usually colored similar to humans (blue, green, grey) and very rarely slightly more than human (purple, red). The longer it's been since feeding, the closer to black the eyes get. Eye color is generally determined by the color they were prior to being changed, though sometimes there are other factors like curses and blessings that can affect it. Initially, Minho's eyes were a golden hazel that looked brilliantly gold after feeding. Now they are heterochromic; his left eye is black while his right eye is the changing hazel shade.

Changing is a violent affair. Few survive it.

[ Backstory ] Chan's story is probably the most ordinary as far as magic goes. He was born into a well off light coven that could handle themselves, his parents respected members of it. His powers first manifested around five years old, but he didn't really come into them until he was eight or so. A late bloomer so to speak. But that didn't bother him or his parents much, who were content with simply having their son connected to their culture and the livelihood. Chan is not overly powerful, his magic reservoir is about average and he can perform several basic spells in a row but needs rest after one large spell. Due to his coven's position, he rarely interacted with other magic users unless necessary and thus his knowledge is more limited. He visits home often but has found himself frustrated with his lack of knowledge in the world, especially given how he can help it so he's been trying to integrate and learn with humans for the last several decades.

Witches aren't particularly liked by society however light witches are tolerated as they tend to appear useful. Light witches are born from lineage, one must be related to other witches in order to manifest powers. There are all types of light witches, from ones who can barely perform basic spells and are nearly human to ones who are devastatingly powerful and can even create new spells. Most fall somewhere in the middle, often leaning to less powerful. According to legend, light witches were blessed by angels while dark witches made pacts with demons, however no one bothers to remember correctly if that's truly the case or not.

Light witches often fall into categories such as "healers", "growers", and "protectors". They draw their energies from connection, usually to themselves but sometimes to greater powers like celestials or elements. This is different from elemental witches. All witches store power within themselves continuously, and draw on it when performing magic. Light witches do not often need particular rituals to manage the flow of their power, but their magic can be slower and messier than dark or elemental witches.

Both light and dark witches have covens, in which power is tied to the individuals in the coven and shared. Larger covens not only have more magic but are more stable while smaller covens have less magic and can be impacted more by negative events. Contrary to popular belief, light and dark witches are not direct opposites of each other, and one does not overpower the other directly. Power hierarchy is dependent on an individual's skills and abilities. Also contrary to belief, light magic is not always used for "good" magic and dark magic is not always used for "bad" magic. A more apt description may be that light magic is bound to "natural" occurrences while dark magic is bound to "unnatural" ones.

Witches do not look different from humans, but there is often a power or aura they exude that can be sensed, similar to a prickling feeling on the back of one's neck.
