Things you said when you were scared
Rachel glanced up from the spread sheets she was pouring over, the light from her laptop casting an odd blue tint across her face. Cosima knew she hated being interrupted when she was working and she'd told her, time and time again, in no uncertain terms that unless the house was on fire, she was not to be disturbed.
She arched an eyebrow as Cosima stood in the doorway of the study, arms crossed over her chest.
"I hope this is interruption is warranted. I suppose it must be something far more pressing than what I'm attending to," she swept a hand in the air.
"Look, I'm sorry, alright?" Her tone is shaky, getting Rachel's attention. "I wouldn't have bothered you, only..."
She trailed off, flushing a scarlet and Rachel stared at her.
"Only what? Words, Cosima."
"I saw a spider. In the bathroom. It jumped out at me while I was peeing."
In retelling the story she shuddered, pulling her arms more securely around her middle.
Taking a measured breath, Rachel considered her, pushing the computer away.
"In the sake of complete clarity," she folded her hands, "you, a scientist, are afraid of spiders?"
The hint of amusement in her was more than mild, though she did her best to taper it down.
Cosima glared. "It's not funny. Yes, I'm aware I'm a scientist and I'm aware that it's stupid for a scientist to be afraid of spiders. But I am--have been since I was a kid, okay? Everyone thought I'd grow out of it, eventually, but I never did."
The whole idea of her girlfriend shaking in terror over what was sure to be a common house spider when she'd been around far more gruesome things as part of her profession was somewhere between comical and very cute, though she would never say as much.
"So, in light of this sudden development," Rachel mused, drawing a hand up to ruby lips, "I suppose you need me to avenge your honor."
"I can't tell if you're kidding or not," Cosima's eyes narrowed from behind her lenses. "But, uh---"
Rachel lifted her index finger in the air, pressed a button on the laptop and closed it with a resigned sigh. "Would you like me to take a look?"
The tiny, childish pout on her lips nearly made Rachel smile, but she settled for a half smirk, rising as though it were an imposition.
They made their way into the bathroom and Cosima pointed toward the ceiling.
"I was minding my own business when it like, swooped down on its creepy web."
"Well, we can't have that, can we?" Rachel stood still, her eyes glued upward. "How long do you think it will be before the creature shows its face, Cosima? My files aren't going to sort themselves."
"I'm sorry I'm such a pain, honestly. And like I said, I'd normally never bother you when you---"
Abruptly, she cut off, emitting a single, piercing scream and nearly jumping into Rachel's arms.
"Oh, for heaven's sake, Cosima. Honestly..."
Taken aback, her arms automatically encircled Cosima's waist, pulling her close. She followed her line of sight, immediately seeing the cause of her outburst.
"Ah, speak of the devil."
"Ugh, Rachel, please, get it away. It's horrible."
Normally, she would have rolled her eyes, but she could plainly see that Cosima's terror was real and quickly, she pressed a kiss atop of her hair.
"I'll take care of it. Go and wait outside."
"Okay," she had visibly paled. "Shout if you need me."
"Are you planning on coming back in?"
"Um, no. Just trying to be supportive."
Rachel pointed to the door. "Go."
Less than five minutes later, she came out of the bathroom, wearing a grim expression.
"Really? Oh my God, Rachel," Cosima heaved a heavy sigh of relief, throwing her arms around her. "Rachel Duncan, business woman, mastermind, and spider killer. You ought to add that to your resume."
"You're ridiculous," she replied disdainfully, though she was secretly pleased at Cosima's appreciation. "It was small, as well. It could barely be considered a spider at all. You made it sound as if it was something one would encounter in The Amazon."
"Looked like it," Cosima muttered. Some of the color had returned to her cheeks and she hugged Rachel again gratefully. "Honestly, you're the best girlfriend in the world."
Rachel wasn't adept at accepting earnest compliments. They still made her vaguely uncomfortable and Cosima doled them out fairly often. She would find herself waving them away or throwing out a caustic remark; anything to get rid of the irksome heat that rose in her cheeks.
There was something to be said for the way Cosima looked; all pink lipped, slightly smudged eyeliner, her hazel eyes shining with what Rachel could only discern as love. It sent her heart fluttering in her chest, the pounding growing more desperate when Cosima picked up her hand, kissing the knuckles.
"Lemme make it up to you."
She pressed the sharp points of her teeth to the inside of Rachel's wrist, nipping against paper thin skin, grinning like some sort of wild beast when Rachel hissed in between her teeth, a low whistle.
