GIMP is a good program but the domain gimp(.)org just expired, the project owners are trying to renew it but those hoping to try it will have to wait. Don't download it from sourceforge, those guys took control of the project from the original owners and loaded the installer down with adverts and spam. Krita and FireAlpaca are great too tho! Krita is more for painting, FA for manga.
I used GIMP for a really, really long time when I first got into digital art. I ended up buying MS5 off of amazon for $20 and I definitely prefer it, but I spent a lot of hours in GIMP and would recommend it. FireAlpaca's also good and I hear... Krita? I think? Is amazing apparently but I've never tried it. (Last I checked the GIMP site has a lot of spam ware and garbage that's easy to accidentally download though so please be safe.) <3
Yikes, thats pretty bad :/ I used GIMP/Fire Alpaca briefly as a kid but i had PS so there was no reason to dedicate serious time into learning it.
I would def recommend MS5 / CSP though. :~) I have it (theyre the same thing) and love it a lot.
Never used Fire Alpaca, but I'd definitely recommend the trials for both SAI and CLIP Studio. Sure CLIP is wonderful, but I can't get used to its lines and blending for the life of me. You might be surprised by the results!
