hello it’s like 1:30am rn and i’m feverish and achy from the two vaccines i got today but i swear i just blinked and then this whole scene was on the page in front of me. no clue how it got there, so here’s an excerpt. hasn’t been proofread; apologies in advance for any godawful errors and goodnight.
Nico shuffles into the kitchen later, yawning, and Jack has to physically turn away just to keep himself from doing something stupid. He looks cozy, suit traded for grey sweatpants, a SC Bern sweatshirt, and plaid-patterned slippers. Jack wants to— He doesn’t even know what he wants to do, so he instead focuses on pulling the pizza out without burning himself or dropping it.
“Just in time, I see,” Nico says, settling himself on one of the stools at the counter.
“Perfect timing,” Jack agrees.
Over pizza and a good bottle of cabernet filched from Jonas’ stash, Nico fills Jack in on all the things that the news didn’t cover: either things that aren’t public yet or just the ridiculous things that Nico witnessed by nature of being around a bunch of politicians all week. Jack has a stitch in his side from laughing by the end of it.
Nico insists upon doing the few dishes after, so Jack’s left to perch himself on the counter next to him, sipping away at the last of the way-too-expensive wine, drying the plates as Nico hands them off.
“How was your week, by the way? I never asked,” Nico says, rinsing off the last of the soap bubbles from the pizza cutter.
“Oh, just the usual.” He neglects to mention the worldview-altering realization he had on his feelings last Tuesday. He takes the last sip of his wine and hands the glass to Nico. “Couldn’t kick the Prime Minister in the balls when he came through, but I can’t say I wasn’t tempted.”
Nico laughs. “I’m sad I missed it.”
Jack smiles, knocking his knee into Nico’s hip. “Me, too.”
They go up to their rooms together, and just as Jack builds up the confidence to open his mouth, Nico bids him goodnight and slips through his door. There’s no chance for Jack to say a word, so he slinks back to his own room and gets ready for bed. He throws on an old university T-shirt and sweatpants and lies down in the dark, hands folded on his stomach. He thinks about Trevor’s words, about baby steps, about taking things slow and letting it unfold at its own pace.
And then he thinks, fuck that.

Update #2: November 2cnd, 2020
Project: The Accidental Sidekick
Phase: First Draft
Chapter One | Word Count: 2151
Excerpt:
"Not to go off or anything, but I think I'm onto something." Sean tried to boost his friend's morale, and a wash of smugness overcame him as a piqued expression found home on Blake's face. He turned his laptop back around and straightened his posture, waiting for Blake's reaction and trading confidence for defensiveness once he noticed Blake's interest drop. "Ok, you've got to hear me out first--"
"Alright..."
"I stumbled across some articles about exaires who had stepped down from being superheroes-- public statements made either by them or the mayor or some other person--and I stumbled across one for Anagalactic."
"The telekinetic chick?" Blake butted in.
"Yeah yeah, the one who moved things around with her mind." Sean confirmed. "But anyways, she wasn't the one to deliver her public resignation: she had a representative speak on her behalf."
"Your point?"
"Blake," Sean angrily sighed. He grabbed the nearest pillow he could reach for and threw it at his friend, watching triumphantly as Blake nearly fell out of his chair trying to dodge it, "I’d get to that if you stopped interrupting!”
Just like that, we’re done week #2! I’m glad to say that I met most of the goals I set up for this week (asides from updating my masterlist because damn adding links to that thing has somehow become confusing again) but nonetheless I think I was pretty productive!
(Stats under cut, TL;DR at bottom of post!)
Total Words:
The Accidental Sidekick is currently sitting at 30,201 words!! It didn’t double from last week, but I did set a goal t hit 25k so just being able to hit that is awesome!! 🎉🎊
Overall Progress:
Took a bit of a dip this week but that turned into a slight curve. Still, I feel like I’m at a good enough place to make subtle updates and be on track to finish by the end of the month. Still 20k to go, but looking at that as 10k a week makes everything seem a lot more managable!
Average Word Count And Estimated Finish:
I wrote just a little less this week than I did last week, but that’s definitely been affected by motivation 😅. I spent a lot of time thinking about the second draft (things I wanted to add, chapters I wanted to revisit, the works) so word count took a bit of a dip. That also pushed back my projected end date by a day, but I’ve always been one to roll with the punches.
Other:
I started up what I’d like to call my “idea dump,” where I’ve been throwing ideas for the second draft as they come along. It’s something to revisit for sure, but it’s a nice way to get those ideas down as they come up
I caught up on my missing chapter!
I made moodboards for Blake and Paladin, so whoop de doo!
I also stopped updating at midnight, so that fixed my update streak
Goals For This Week:
Write a bit over 10k this week
Slide in a character introduction for Miss Mimic and (maybe) Director Kennedy 👀
TLDR: Things went pretty alright this week! I lost a bit of momentum and motivation, so that affected my word count, but it was nothing too detrimental to the cause. I’ve got a lot to look forward to (and I’m lowkey excited to make mood boards for who just might be my favorite characters,) so I’m ready to give this week another go!
