Progress Report #10
I am wrapping up my ethnography and it’s been an experience to say the least. When I started this class I had no clue what it was going to really be about. I was surprised to find out that we would be doing a research project over a fandom and how literacy is found/used in it. I have learned a great deal about literacy and where to find it. I feel I have grown as a student and also as a researcher. I found it interesting that many of the participants in my survey were also Grey’s Anatomy fans because of the exact same reason I was. They also learned from the ethnography an understanding that literacy isn’t just a matter of fact definition, it is a very broad definition. I feel my participants did a great job at answering my questions. I feel they all learned more about literacy just by taking the survey and asking me questions. It was great to interact with them and learn about the fandom in a way that would only be possible by speaking with other members. Literacy means more to me now than it did when I began the class. I didn’t know what to expect from this class, but I am glad I took it and glad I learned from it.
