Friends of the Arab World Institute Prize

Deadline: 25 October 2019

The Prize for young contemporary Arab artists highlights emerging visual artists from the Arab World.

Criteria

Participation in the competition is reserved for applicants who meet the following requirements; they must be:

A national of one of the following countries: Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, or Yemen.

An artist involved in the visual arts (drawing, photography, video, installations, etc.)

Aged under 40 (or aged 40) on 31 October 2019

Apply as an individual

An artist whose work has never been the subject of a monograph (other than in a gallery and art school).

Be able to speak some English or French

Benefits

The Prizewinning artist will:

Work in a residential studio in Paris for 3 months, at the Cité international des arts

Receive a grant worth 5000 euros

Participate to a collective exhibition in the Arab World Institute (AWI)

The awarded artwork enters the AWI museum collections

Women Photograph Grants

Deadline: 15 May 2019

Women Photograph is an initiative that launched in 2017 to elevate the voices of women visual journalists. Women Photograph is inclusive of a plurality of femme voices including trans, queer and non-binary people. Women Photograph operates an annual series of project grants for emerging and established photojournalists.

Criteria

These grants are open to women and non-binary documentary photographers of any nationality.

Benefits

There are two grants available:

1. Women Photograph + Nikon Grants:

These $5,000 grants will support photography projects — either new or in-progress — from visual journalists working in a documentary capacity. Five grants are available, one of which will be earmarked for a non-binary or transgender photographer. Applicants are encouraged to submit a story, rather than singles, as part of the grant application. The images need not be related to the project proposal. Multimedia projects are welcome.

2. Women Photograph + Getty Images Grant

Women Photograph has partnered with Getty Images to award a $10,000 grant in support of an ongoing documentary project from a professional photojournalist who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to their story. Applicants should submit portfolios of 20-25 images indicating that a substantial amount of work has already been completed, and that the photographer has a clear vision of what further work is needed to complete the project. Additional consideration will be given to applicants who evince a personal connection to – and engagement with – the communities they cover.

Malmo Arab Film Festival Development Fund

Deadline: 31 May 2019

MAFF Development Funding aspires to stimulate co-productions between Sweden and the Arab countries and is available for feature films and documentaries. MAFF offers development funding to emerging and established filmmakers who have a compelling and distinctive story to tell. 

Criteria

Films must be co-produced by a Swedish partner and one of the below two points:

The story of the film must have a connection to Arab culture, identity or exile.

The film is a co-production between at least one Swedish and one Arab producer.

Benefits

Development fund for feature films: SEK 150,000 presented by the Swedish Film Institute

Development fund for documentary films: SEK 75,000 presented by the Swedish Film Institute

Franklin Furnace Fund (New York)

Deadline: 1 April 2019

The Franklin Furnace Fund awards grants annually to early career artists to enable them to produce major performance art works in New York. 

Early career artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply; however, artists selected by the panel are expected to present their work in New York City. Full-time students are ineligible.

Artists who are awarded funding must present new works of performance art – though it is acceptable for these works to be shown in earlier iterations as works-in-progress. Projects may begin as early as August 1, 2019.

Eligibility

Artists who:

— are in the early stages of their creative development — have a focused direction and are actively creating new work in performance art — have yet to be substantially celebrated within their field, the media, funding circles or the public at large — are vocational (as opposed to avocational, academic, amateur or educational) artists — are not participating in any degree-granting programs (K-12, undergraduate, graduate) in any field — artists who generate new works and claim creative “authorship” and creative control in the creation of new work, and whose primary practice is centered in creation of new work through their roles as performance artists — expand the aesthetic or social experience in the discipline in which they work and/or reclaim and revive traditional forms in original ways — create works that are:      - compelling and has a distinctive vision and authentic voice      - connecting with intended audiences/participants      - engaging aesthetically and experientially      - are bold and risk-taking      - imaginative, rigorous, and well-executed

Benefits

Grants range between USD $2,000 and $10,000 based on the peer review panel allocation of funding received by Franklin Furnace.

يدعم هذا البرنامج الفنانين والأدباء تحت سن 35 سنة من المنطقة العربية من خلال تقديم منح لإنتاج مشاريعهم الإبداعية الأولى. تصل قيمة المنحة إلى عشرة آلاف 10000 دولار أمريكي في مجالات الأدب، والموسيقى، وفنون الأداء، والفنون البصرية، وخمسة عشر ألف 15000 دولار أمريكي في مجال السينما والفيديو. يسهم البرنامج في إعطاء فرصة للشباب لخلق أعمالٍ مبتكرة وفي تطوير أشكال جديدة للتعبير الفني.

Al Mawred Al Thaqafy’s Production Awards Program supports artists and writers from the Arab region, below the age of 35, by offering grants to enable them to produce their first creative projects. Grants of up to $10,000 are available for projects in literature, music, performing arts and visual arts and of up to $15,000 for projects in cinema and video. The program helps give young people the opportunity to create original works and develop new forms of artistic expression.

يتطلع برنامج وَصْل إلى تمكين القطاع الثقافي في المنطقة العربية وبناء روابط بين المؤسسات الثقافية. يهدف البرنامج الى التشبيك بين المؤسسات الثقافية المستقلة وتعزيز ثقافة التعاون والتعلم المتبادل ما بينها من خلال دعم مشاريع تعاون واضحة الرؤية ومحددة الأهداف وتنظيم ورشات عمل تدريبية تشاركية تعتمد على “التعلّم بين النظراء” لتصبح قوة ثقافية ونقدية فاعلة ترسخ قيم حرية الإبداع والعدالة الاجتماعية.

المؤهل للتقدم

هذا البرنامج مفتوح للمؤسسات الثقافية والفنية التي أسسها ويديرها فنانون و/أو فاعلون ثقافيون من إحدى الدول العربية (من كل الإثنيات ودون استثناء غير المواطنين).

يجب أن تكون إحدى المؤسستين المتقدمتين مسجلة بشكل قانوني وأن تكون مؤسسة متوسطة الحجم. أما المؤسسة الثانية فيجب أن تكون مؤسسة و/أو مبادرة ثقافية وفنية مستقلة مهما يكن حجمها أو ميزانيتها.

أن تكون المؤسستان المتقدمتان بالمشروع المشترك من بلدين عربيين مختلفين، أو من منطقتين ضمن البلد الواحد تفصلهما حدود معترف أو غير معترف بها دولياً (بسبب الاحتلال، التقسيم السياسي…).

على المتقدمين التقدّم سويةً بفكرةٍ لمشروع مشترك على أن تكون الفكرة مبتكرة وقابلة للتحقق. يحبذ أن تكون المشاريع عابرة للمجالات وتطمح إلى الاستدامة.

الفوائد

يقدّم البرنامج تمويلاً مبدئياً 7000 دولار أمريكي لدعم مشروع تعاون ثقافي بين مؤسستين شريكتين؛ ورشة عمل تدريبية تشاركية بين النظراء؛ إقامة (زيارة عمل) لمدة أسبوع واحد في مدينة ومؤسسة الشريك (إقامة لكل من الشريكين)؛ متابعة مسار التعاون ومراحله المختلفة تنفذها مجموعة من المدراء الثقافيين والمدربين المختصين؛ مجموعة أدوات داعمة للتطور المهني والمؤسسي ولإدارة مشاريع التعاون؛ الارتباط بشبكة من الفاعلين والمؤسسات الثقافية واجتماع تشبيك ختامي.

Tamteen Grants

في إطار نشاطه المختّص بالتجوال العالمي للفنانين والفاعلين الثقافيين، يقدم صندوق روبرتو تشيميتا منحة بعنوان "تمتين"، وهي تهدف إلى تعزيز مبادرات الفنانين والفاعلين الثقافيين من المنطقة العربية او الشرق الأوسط أصحاب مشاريع محلية (أماكن، شبكات، منصات). وإلى خلق أثر الرافعة لإعادة التوازن بين الفعاليات الثقافية العربية والفعاليات الأوروبية علاوة على تعزيز واستدامة التبادل الثقافي بين البلدان العربية والشرق أوسطية.

معايير الأهلية

المنحة موجهة لفنانين وفاعلين ثقافيين مقيمين في العالم العربي.

فوائد

قيمة المنحة المقدمة 3000 يورو كحد أقصى ويمكن إذا اقتضى الأمر، أن تكون جزءاً من تمويل مشترك لمشروع. تهدف المنحة إلى ترسيخ مشاريع ثقافية في المنطقة وتعزيز استداماتها وخلق شبكات بينها. وسيقوم مجلس الإدارة وخبراء من صندوق روبرتو تشيميتا بمتابعة تنفيذ المشاريع المختارة.

In the context of international mobility and exchange of artists and cultural operators, the Roberto Cimetta Fund  is running the Tamteen funding line to support the sustainability of cultural and artistic initiatives lead by Arab or Middle Eastern artists and cultural operators developing local projects (venues, networks, platforms). The fund aims to create a leverage effect that could modestly contribute to rebalancing forces between Arab/Middle Eastern and European components in the exchange, as well as strengthening and sustaining cultural exchange between Arab/Middle Eastern regions. 

Eligibility

This fund is open for organisations, artists collectives and independent cultural managers based in the Arab - Middle Eastern world and who have been operating for at least a year. 

Benefits

The grants provided will not exceed 3000€ and can be considered as co-funding depending on the projects selected. The experts and Board members of the Roberto Cimetta Fund will monitor the selected projects during their implementation.
