Summary
Typesetting is using type to create words, sentences & lines of text.
Legibility how easy it is to recognize and read a block of text. Legibility & readability are the essences of typography. An easy mistake is to assume the larger the text the more readable, this is not true, there are lots of factors.
Measurements
Type has its own unit of measurements. Based on letterpress type measured in picas & points 1 inch = 6 picas = 72 points = 25,4millimeters.
Leading
The space between the lines of text, another term related to letterpress. Leading is measured from baseline to baseline.
Most text readable is set at about 1,5x the type size.
Kering
The distance between individual letters.
Letter Spacing
The addition of spaces between letters across a body of text, also known as tracking.
Alignment
How the text in a paragraph is set out. Text can be set, aligned right, left, center or justified + fully justified.
Hyphenation
Splitting a long word to fit column widths.
