Summary
Introduction
Typography is central to the practice of graphic design. The western alphabet we recognize today has developed over a millennial, drawing from ancient Phoenician, Greek, Etruscan & Roman Letterforms & writing traditions as well as Arabic numerals.
Typography = Mechanical reproduction of words through printing.
Lettering = Hand rendered type, writing & calligraphy.
It is easy to assume that the most invaded many developments in technologies. However ancient china and Korea developed paper, movable type & printing presses centuries before Europe.
Movable type
Johann Gutenberg developed the first European movable type, printing a copy of the bible in 1455 while William Caxton printed the first English books in 1475.
It was through the act of printing that the English language started to become unified.
As printing spread across Europe to Italy typeface began to develop that reflected the ideals of Renaissance. Letterpress has given us much of the technical language
of typography, uppercase & lowercase letters, fonts, typeface.
Type: individuals metal letters, used in letterpress printing.
Fonts: Characters in a given typeface, Fx uppercase & lowercase, punctuation & symbols.
Typefaces: Fonts that are of a related design Times New Roman italic & bold, uppercase, lowercase, numerals & different sizes of fonts.
Typography: Design of typeface and their day to day use.
