It's time to make some ART! Whether you prefer to unplug, draw, speak, hunt, or collect, we have artist-created instructions to help you explore new ideas. Head to our Live Projects Tumblr and see the "art actions" tab to explore our collaborative Let's Do This! project!
Everything is perfect.
For Project Los Altos, artist Kateřina Šedá is compiling a Guinness Book of World Records-inspired catalog of Los Altos records. So far, highlights include the Largest Pez Dispenser Collection, Largest Number of Adopted Pets, Biggest Plastic Pot, Longest Knitted Pig Hat, and Most Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Eaten. See more records and explore the project here! And pssssst: you can hear all about this fascinating project at tonight's artist talk at SFJAZZ in Hayes Valley!
Bones for Beginners
Join us tonight at the Roxie at 7pm for a special screening and Q&A with Project Los Altos featured artist and acclaimed writer/director Mike Mills. Blue Bottle Coffee + Modern Art Desserts partnered up once again with SFMOMA for the third installment of their Live Projects event series.
We will be serving New Orlean's-style iced coffee in the theatre, along with a bag of treats that are to be consumed at particular moments throughout the film. Sort of like a drinking game... but with cookies.
We watched everything by Mike Mills several times over in preparation for this event and presented him with a few ideas ahead of time: one that included various flavored sherbet gel caps, another incorporating an edible accordion book.
In one interview I read, Mills stated that in his work as a Graphic Designer, he will often listen to an album he is doing a cover for on repeat for several days in order to come up with ideas for it. This really resonated, as we follow a similar approach with the desserts projects we take on. Tonight you will have the honor to hear more about his process, and witness his wise and thoughtful manner, in a Q+ A with SFMOMA's own Gina Basso after the screening.
While we are obviously huge Mike Mills fans and while it is true that we swoon at any mention Ewan McGregor, nothing gets our attention like a cute dog. So we could not help but feature Arthur the dog (who plays a main part in the film) to play a main part of our edible offering tonight.
In the film, Oliver (played by Ewan McGregor- swoon), inherits a Jack Russell, Arthur (played by Cosmo), from his father after he dies. For those who haven't seen Beginners (you can tonight!), Arthur has subtitles. This could be taken for him "talking," but Mills suggests that the drawings and dog's subtitles throughout the movie are "a way to externalize a character who was sometimes non-verbal."
With the understanding that dogs do not talk, the occasional instances where Arthur has subtitles, leads us to believe he at least understands. So keep an eye out for that charming pup and his subtitles, because those will be the moments you get to eat a treat.
