Things are starting to get weird...Corona Virus is beginning to restrict face to face meetings and contact with others. 

We are having to move everything online, including writing workshops and communication with our team. 

While this is tricky, it is possible. Ensuring we keep our notifications for Slack, emails, socials etc. ON, we will be able to maintain consistent contact and progress. 

Other items discussed; 

~ submit your work! our editors are encouraging all of us to do this. don’t be scared as we are all at the same level. 

~ make sure everyone is updated on our email address and password for gmail and google drive

~ confirm submissions guidelines/opening date and post to socials - Alex and prod. team to send through edited image to post with this. 

~ head shots and short bio’s to be uploaded by end of this week for us to edit and start uploading by Monday... 

~ Kat volunteered to edit these pics monochrome style to suit the overall aesthetic of our magazine - we all agreed this was a great idea. 

~ I also workshopped three of my poems that I had sent in.

thanks to our production management team, we have a logo and banner for our socials; Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

these were decided on after a strategic brainstorming session, where we considered what our magazine’s visual aesthetic would be.

drawing inspiration from Frankie magazine, we decided on a simple, minimalistic look, to symbolise a ‘blank canvas or page’ for people to add their work to. this also signifies that we aren’t sticking to a particular theme or subject for our issues ~ we will be accepting and publishing all kinds of disciplines and themes.

we also decided to stick to this minimalistic style for the entire magazine’s aesthetic - monochrome colour scheme which replaces the grey with a pastel colour each issue (for both consistency and change), lowercase letters except for names and titles (excluding the magazine name), clean posting where possible - little to no text. image based posting. using only a handful of emoji’s and some text symbols to start each caption for each post. 

each of these decisions will help in creating a consistent brand image that will be easily recognised and increase engagement for the content we are producing.

unfortunately I had an unknown timetable clash and was unable to attend this meeting. Chrysel took notes for me however and filled me in on what I had missed.

we will be accepting written works of all kinds; poetry, fiction, non-fiction, screenplays, reviews, etc.

~ Magazine Roles ~

Which one would I choose? What are my skills? My strengths? My weaknesses that I’d like to improve on? My career goals? 

I enjoy writing, editing, visual design and social networking/building an online identity. Even though editing might be a path I might wish to follow, it’s not something I can realistically put my time and effort into at the moment considering the workload I already have within and outside uni. 

In regards to weaknesses...I lack experience in the publishing world as I have never submitted to a publication before (besides one that published all submissions - still proud of this nonetheless as it was a big step for me to submit my work somewhere at all). I believe my reluctance to submit comes from a fear of comparing the style and quality of my writing to others. I hope to overcome this as I write and submit writing to workshops in this project. 

In regards to how this will connect to my career goals, online identity, strategy and reflection are huge aspects of what I want to do after graduation. I already have a creative visual podcast I am hosting and managing along with my own writing page/blog ~ both which rely on cultivating an engaging creative identity and brand online, and both I wish to improve on through applying the skills and knowledge I will obtain during this project. 

I also had to evaluate how much time would be needed for each role and which would fit into my timetable the easiest.

I settled on nominating for the social media management team ~ I already manage a few accounts as it is for outside of uni projects (my visual podcast and my poetry page), so I did worry that maybe adding socials account to manage would be too much...I decided however that this wouldn’t be the case as even though it might be difficult at times, anything I do or any goal I wish to reach will have obstacles to overcome. It all depends if I am dedicated to overcoming them and can put strategies and steps in place to give myself the best possible chance to.

Feeling inspired and intrigued. We went over what our project of “writing for publication” was going to entail.

~ Building an arts and culture magazine intended to showcase the work of QUT students.

~ Web-based with potential for a print edition for semester 2.

~ Our focus is publishing QUT students along with commissioned work from established writers and QUT alumni to gain credibility for both our magazine and emerging writers.

~ What will we publish? Poetry, fiction, non-fiction, essays, reviews...
