Halloween pattern

After completing the leaves pattern I decided to stick to the autumn theme. My next pattern item is Halloween pattern.

First of all, I did some research on which elements I would like to include to my design and then elaborate the choice.

When the research was  done I started to sketch the elements I like and then scan them. I stopped by at “Trick and Treat” theme with elements of Halloween candies and some spooky characters. 

For this pattern, I used the similar color palette as for the leaves pattern. All the colors are natural except black one and white which were used for spooky characters.

I used shading techniques such as knife tool to add up some volume to my objects. When all the elements were ready I had to decide which ones would be suitable for my pattern and look harmonically together.

When the elements were positioned correctly I repeated the same steps to create the swatch for a seamless pattern. Although I faced up with some difficulties as not really precise repositioning of the elements on the opposite side of the box. I had to do all the composition all over again due to this mistake.

At the end, the pattern was ready to be added to swatches and used as a pattern background.

Autumn leaves pattern

My first pattern item is live traced leave pattern. 

I started up with gathering some leaves and let them dry on fresh air. Afterwards, I used them as a tool to do the prints of them which later on I would scan. After the scanning process, I discovered that the image is not convertible into vector even though I planned to do so. After some tries, I found the way to do it correctly. I had to live trace them twice and in between process the prints in Photoshop so that there won’t be a white background.

After processing the scanning images I worked on the outer leaves contour and adding up the details to them.

After the elements were ready to create the pattern, I had to think about the composition. It’s important to align them with the help of bounding box so that you see where the elements could possibly cross when they are repeated on the other side of the box. I took me some time to position them in a good way so that there won’t be overlaps or big gaps in between the elements.

The next step was putting the elements which cross the border of the bounding box to the opposite side of it exactly in the same distance and length of the bounding box. Then we create the clipping mask with or without background colour. 

When this box with the pattern is ready we have to use crop tool so that the edges which come outside of the box would be hidden. When it’s done the pattern is ready to be added as a swatch. We use the swatch to create the seamless pattern background.

Pattern line project

For the past few weeks I’ve been practicing my drawing skills in Illustrator and further on pattern techniques. 

First of all I draw a basic composition manually on paper and then transferred it to vector format so that I could adjust the layout for the pattern creation.

I was working on pattern technique called bounding box. You have to place all your elements of composition inside the bounding box. Some elements should cross pass with the border line of the bounding box so that the composition would repeat continuously outside of the box as well. I was following some tutorials for that:

I had to work long time to adjust the elements of the fruit composition so that it’s borders would match with the repeating elements from the sides, top and bottom of the bounding box.

First the pattern didn’t repeat properly because I didn’t use the technique properly. After some attempts I came to this result.

Although I need to improve my skills of element repositioning outside of the box so that the won’t be rough cut edges when the pattern is multiplied.
