Huh. I wonder why I have this strange feeling of impending doom suddenly.

She’s at the house party but she feels about a decade younger, an eleven year old at a funeral.

“Oh, yeah,” her roommate, a year older, working on a master’s degree already, says, “this is Thera, right now at least, she’s trying out new names.”

“Hey, Thera,” the most beautiful woman in the world is saying, red cup of something in her hands, “I’m Cal. This your first time at my place, right? Give us some trivia. What’s up with Thera?”

And because Thera is more gay than smart, the first thing that comes out is this:

“When I was thirteen I thought I had gone to another world and been turned into a dragon as some fucked up conversion therapy thing.”

And the party is silent after that.

The great beast roared in pain. It was bound by iron shackles, lured into this trap by the sweet smells of roast flesh. A dozen Therrine soldiers held the chain, as The One Voice walked closer, in the ruined castle hall that had served as trap this night.

“My King,” Boy-King Kyle, formerly of Kentucky, currently newly crowned king of Thera, said. “My brother is sick. He took the Great Under-Queen’s coin in payment for betrayal but it is not his fault. He was laid astray.”

The two queens, sisters, of course, were quiet. It was brave, perhaps, talking to The One Voice like that, resplendent, unable to be seen beyond the glow of his features. But the Boy-King was brave, at least.

“And is not the price of betrayal punishment?” The Luminous Figure said, his voice terrible and soft. “I would be justified in keeping him like this for all time, as a warning.”

“He deserves mercy!”

“Deserves?” The One Voice cried out suddenly, like the voice of thunder in the sky. “He deserves nothing! The Under-Queen is a rot and a betrayal, even now she crawls towards our lands with her seven Dread Lieutenants, thinking to sink the world to her reign. And this wretch here helped her!”

“My King,” Kyle said, and bowed, none would have saved the dragon then if The One Voice struck it down.

The Luminous Being spoke.

“But I and my Father are merciful kings indeed.”

And a great light sudden shot out, and the dragon cried again, in agony, as scale and flesh began to slough off, and the glowing form of a small boy showed itself under the monster.
