App marketing tips #2 - Useful hints from Google I/O
As many of you probably now, Google annually holds a conference for developers called Google I/O. It is a great source of information about what is going on in mobile development world. This year, Patrick Mork, Google’s marketing director for mobile applications, gave a very interesting speech about marketing your apps. It is titled Marketing 101 for Developers and you can find the whole video here. We really recommend viewing this material, but for those of you, who doesn't have time to watch it all, below are some points that we found particularly interesting.
In 42labs.net we already know, how hard it is to promote your new application in the Android market. Algorithms of Google Play (and Google in general) are a mystery, and getting your application to the front page of a search result is a crucial thing to get the customers attention. However, there are some ways to improve your app download rate. During the mentioned Google I/O conference, Patrick Mork revealed some useful tips for the developers in terms of making your app more visible:
You need to get the people to talk about your app. The more times it is mentioned (with the link to the Google Play of course) outside the store - on a blogs, Twitter entries, Facebook walls, forums, etc., the higher it will rank in the search results. Seems obvious, but it turns out it is extremely important to create the "hype" about your app...
Number of installs has a direct impact on a search ranking of your application. Simple: the more installs, the higher it appears on a results page.
Similar rule: number of uninstalls also affects your application search ranking. There is an important conclusion behind this - you should never invest in marketing a product, that isn't good enough. People will notice your app, download it, and than realize it is not that good at all. Number of uninstalls will rise leading to poorer rank in the search results. You cannot lie to your customers.
And here are some more tips from Patrick's speech, not related to the search results:
One important advice about advertising. While promoting the Google Play, they found out that the best CTRs (click-through rate, number of clicks you get per number of times your ad is being displayed) are connected with search-related advertisements. Why? For instance, people looking for the term 'sports apps' in google will probably be more interested in your sport app targeted advertisement, than the ones that will see your awesome sport game ad while playing Angry Birds. Results of such campaign are said to be 10 times more effective. Well, we think this may be a little advertisement of a Google ads themselves, but you must say this sounds legit :)
And the last, but most surprising tip you can get from the Google employee - you should use as many distribution channels as possible to promote your application! Not very usual thing to hear on a Google I/O, as that of course means putting it into (for example) Amazon app store... ;) But Google hopes that their market will be the main one the developers will use for a long time...
Well, that is probably all. If you are more interested in marketing tips connected with the Google Play, you should definitely read those posts by Johannes Borchardt - they provide a lot of useful advice about how to get your application really visible and attractive to the customers.
