Continuity, everyone has their own method but keeping your actor’s look consistent, continuous and most importantly identical, boils down to having a keen eye and attention to detail.
Continuity is crucial for the journey your actor takes throughout the film or tv show, you may shoot a scene in January and pick up the end of the scene 3 months down the line. We all think we can remember every single detail but on a 3am call after very little sleep, its hard to recall if there was blood on the left nostril or right - unless you have the continuity note or photo to back it up!
So to help you keep your calm under any continuity conundrum we have a quick hit list of our top continuity tips!
------------------------------------------------------------
- We love using Pages on our iphone - you can instantly make a4 continuity documents that can be stored as a pdf on your phone or printed. - you can also name each document for example ‘ HULK - Shoot day 12 - Scene 2- Day1′. Your photos can be taken from your phone straight onto the document and arranged in any size you want to fit as many photos on the a4 sheet as possible.
- Make a face chart of the key look as its established with all the products listed & placement of any wounds, facial hair or wigs. You can do this on top of a printed photo of your actor in their makeup, that way its totally clear where things are meant to be. Add some swatches of colours if you have mixed something bespoke for that actor.
- We also love Sync on set, this is a great place to use as a back up to your printed continuity, for example if you are on set and need a quick reference, you can log in on your phone or ipad and all the continuity you have uploaded + all of the shows continuity is easy to access. Sync on set is a brilliant paperless archive.
- When you make notes, keep them clear and concise - noting products used and where on the actors face, hands or body.
- Keep a note of the date you did the makeup, haircut, beard trim ect for the first time, the scene number, the episode, the time of day & a brief description of the scene - this will instantly jog your memory as to where the pictures were and for what scene.
- Take photos in Portrait mode - this blurs any rubbish in the background and really focuses on the makeup
-Take 360′ photos against a white or plain background if you can or dont have portrait mode and close ups of any small details, dirt, blood, sweat, a hair out of place for example.
-Whenever something ‘new’ happens, take a photo and make a note - eg ‘rained and mascara ran’ you may need your actor to have a smudge under their lash in the next scene.
- Take monitor shots at the beginning, middle and end of the scene. Or where anything of significance happens. Make pages for this & add notes.
- Take a photo of your makeup station for that particular makeup or actor, if all else fails you can remind yourself of the makeup by seeing the products in front of you!
- Keep a clear printed version of your makeup to hand, a great way of doing this is using a Kodak printer for your establishing look - the photos are lovely and clear and you can leave the machine printing whilst you clean your brushes!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We hope these top tips will keep you in continuity heaven not continuity confusion!
