Find Me Under the Mistletoe (For Kira, prongsexual)
“Me neither.”
Lily waited until the Marauders and the Quidditch team had already visited James before fabricating some Heads’ business to give herself an excuse to go. She told Mary that she would tell James that she thought her feelings towards him had developed much beyond the amicable relationship they had discovered whilst working together as Head Boy and Head Girl, and she knew that she would have to do it soon anyway because Mary was not known for being able to keep secrets.
She walked into the Hospital Wing and the first person she saw was Sirius, leaning back on his chair far enough to rest his feet on James’ bed. He looked at her searchingly when she walked in, a hint of suspicion on his face, which disappeared into a smirk. “Evans!” he greeted her and James’ head snapped round to Lily, a smile appearing on his face. Lily could not help but notice that the smile was no longer arrogant, there was no hint of James making the assumption that she was there because she had feelings for him. Instead he was happy to see that one of his friends had come to visit him. Granted, he was maybe happier than he would be if it was Marlene, but Lily pushed that thought to the back of her mind. She did not want to make any assumptions herself, either.
As she approached the bed, Lily briefly turned her attention back to Sirius and saw that his smirk had not disappeared. James might not be making any assumptions about why she was there, but there was no doubt that Sirius was. Lily felt the heat rise in her cheeks, but whether it was from awkwardly acknowledging that Sirius was right, or anger at his presumptuousness, she did not know. All she knew was that she needed to get him out of there so that she could talk to James alone. She stood at the foot of the bed and gave Sirius a pointed look.
“What?” he asked shortly.
“Don’t you want to go and get some food or something?”
He shrugged. “Remus and Peter have gone to get some.”
Lily sighed, smoothing her palm along the bottom corner of James’ bed so that she had somewhere to sit down. “I just wanted to discuss some Head’s business with James, Sirius, it won’t be very interesting.”
“I love hearing about all the head you give-“
“Sirius!” James and Lily objected at the same time, but Sirius just laughed, his feet falling down to the floor so that he could sit forwards on his chair. “I’m going to be straight with you, Lily, I’m really glad you’ve finally decided to do this,” he said and Lily’s eyes flashed. She was annoyed enough that he was still sat there, but the fact that he had figured out the truth so easily unnerved her.
“Decided to do what?” she demanded. “To tell James that we have to have the professors ensure everybody who’s meant to be on the train to go home on Friday is?”
“Oh, come on, Evans, we all know that’s not why you’re here,” replied Sirius.
Lily glared at him, her irritation too high now to consider that maybe this was her perfect opportunity. Sirius would be the first person James told anyway, and all she had to do now, was say, “you’re right, now can you give us a moment, please?” but instead, she stood up and scowled at him. “You don’t know anything, Sirius Black, you hear me?” she said menacingly. “I came because my friend got hit by two Bludgers and fell near on fifteen feet and I wanted to check that he was okay, but also because life in this school still goes on even with the Head Boy being injured, and I’m sure Madam Pomfrey is a good enough mediwitch that he’ll be out in time to help me with this. So for once keep your dirty mind to yourself and leave me and my business alone.”
With that, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, the door slamming behind her as she just about caught James mutter, “Thanks a bunch, Padfoot.” Outside the room, she sighed and leant against the wall, her head tilted back and her eyes closed in frustration. When he was out of there, she promised herself, she would talk to him.
Lily stayed away from the Hospital Wing for those last few days of term, with only Mary knowing and keeping her secret. Each time she entered the common room she looked over to the corner that the Marauders always sat. Each time it was a meal time, she sought out that black mop of hair, but only found that of his best friend, and she would follow her friends to whichever seats they headed for, trying not to let her disappointment show.
The last day before the Christmas holidays, the very morning that Lily had to catch the train back to London again, she found herself wandering the corridors aimlessly, thoughts of James haunting her mind
“Careful,” a voice interrupted her thoughts. “That’s mistletoe you’re about to walk under there and, if I know Sirius, it’ll be enchanted so you can’t escape.”
“Oh!” Lily looked up, his sudden appearance making her jump. She stared at the black-haired boy who had been on her thoughts so much recently, her tongue tied now that she was faced with him and all the words she had prepared for this moment floating away from her, her mouth instead producing a dumb, “You’re out.”
James smiled back at her, his eyes occasionally darting back up to the mistletoe that she was only one step away from standing under. “I had to be let out for Christmas, didn’t I?”
Lily nodded, shuffling her feet as she tried to think of a response that wouldn’t make her look stupid.
“I’m glad you are anyway. I was worried for a bit there.” He looked up at her, almost shyly, giving Lily the sudden burst of confidence to take a step forwards, still talking, not wanting to be too obvious, but knowing he would notice. “That was a long way you fell, and I thought maybe Pomfrey would want to keep you over Christmas. It would have been a shame for your holidays to be affected like that.”
“My mother wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t go… hey, Lils?”
“Hmm?” Lily asked, though she knew from the way he looked above her head what he was going to say.
“You’re standing under the mistletoe.”
She kept her eyes steady on his. “I guess you’ll have to kiss me then,” she all but whispered. James stayed where he was for too long, in Lily’s opinion. He eyed her warily, and she could practically see the cogs working in his brain to try and discern whether or not she was being serious. Finally, he stepped forwards to meet her, just pressing his lips to hers for mere seconds before pulling back, tantalisingly early for Lily who just wanted to kiss him like she had kissed nobody else, for him to kiss her as if she were the only girl he had ever kissed.
“Lily…” James uttered, a slight groan in his voice, as though he knew what she was thinking, but didn’t understand. As if he thought she was going to break his heart again. He didn’t know how dangerously close he was to breaking her heart with his hesitating, and maybe that was why Lily chose that moment to place a hand on his cheek and silence his protests by rising onto her toes and kissing him back. She tangled her fingers through his hair, stopping him from pulling back again. Despite their kissing, the smile never left her lips, and once James’ arms had wrapped around her, she knew that this was where she wanted to stay. Whatever happened with school, with the war, with everything, Lily wanted James to be by her, his arms open whenever she wanted them to be.
“I’m going to miss you over the holidays,” she told him when she had finally let the contact between their lips go.
“I always miss you,” James replied, but there was a line between his eyes, confusion clouding his face. “Lily… What is this? I mean, what was that? I mean… I don’t know.”
His failure to just accept it, and to keep kissing her and to ask her out again so that she could finally say yes as she imagined would happen, threw Lily off. She stepped backwards, trying to distance herself from him, thinking maybe it would make him more comfortable.
“Lily…” he repeated and she turned away, shaking her head as she started to leave.
“This was a bad idea. You’ve… you don’t even think of me in that way anymore,” she said quietly. “Just when I’d started to like you back as well.”
“I didn’t… I was just… Look, you’re going to have to come back here and kiss me, anyway!” he finally called after her, at a last hope attempt. She span around, furious over his presumptuousness.
“Why?” she asked and then stopped in her tracks, following his eye line above his head to see that the tables had been turned. He had stepped forwards to chase her and now he was the one stuck under the mistletoe. She crossed her arms. “Give me one good reason why I should,” she demanded, ignoring the niggling voice at the back of her mind which told her not to question it.
“Because…” he sighed and looked at her almost pleadingly. “Because I think if you’re going to be my girlfriend, it’s only fair that you don’t leave me here to be kissed by someone else.”
“W-what did you just say?” Lily asked, starting to move back towards him, her breath quickening.
“Lily, will you go out with me?” he asked the same question that he had hundreds of times before, in one way or another, and got the answer that he had only had once before – that very first time when she didn’t realise what he had been suggesting.
“Yes.”
She ran down the corridor, back to him. He was only able to grin and stand on the same spot, his arms open to catch her when she collided with him, crashing her mouth back to his. He smiled into her lips, before pulling back. “We need to catch the train.”
“Mm… let’s just stay here,” Lily argued, running her fingers lightly along the top of the his neck, tracing the line where his hair ended.
James started to laugh, his head nodding forwards so that his forehead rested against hers. “No, Lils, it’s Christmas, my mum would kill me. Don’t you want to see your family?”
She let out a little sigh. “My parents, yes.”
“Things are rough with your sister, still?”
Lily nodded, taking his hand and starting to walk to the stairs for the Entrance Hall. “I’m meant to be meeting her fiancé over the holidays. He’s going to be awful, I just know it.”
The stairs started to move, thankfully cutting their journey by half, and James took the time that they stood still to wrap his arms around her again. “I’ll just have to visit loads and make it better then, won’t I?” When a smile broke out on Lily’s face, James carried on talking. “Of course, you have to come round to mine as well at some point. We’ve got Sirius for a lot of the holidays though, so it depends whether you want to see his ugly mug or not.”
Lily hit James lightly, recommencing the walk to catch the carriages to Hogsmeade station. “He’s your best friend, don’t be mean.”
“He’s my best friend so I can be mean.”
“I’d love to.”
James stopped where he was. “You’d love to be mean to Sirius or you’d love to come round?” Lily just laughed in response, rolling her eyes at him, and placing a small kiss on the corner of his lips.
“Come on, idiot, we’ve got a train to catch and news to tell our friends, and then we can make arrangements for when we meet up over the holidays,” she said, grabbing his hand again and pulling him off towards what was looking like a much better Christmas holiday than she had been expecting.

Lily Evans was hurrying to the herbology greenhouse and was almost late. She was never late. Rushing along, she abruptly paused, sensing something in the snow behind her. Suddenly, she was hit with a freezing snowball straight in the back of the neck. Suppressing a scream, she whirled around, and was faced with the one and only James Potter. His cocky smile began to fade as he was met with her furious glare.
She quickly bent down, grabbing a handful of snow herself. Before James could even make a move to protect himself, she hurled the snowball at his face. In a strike of luck on Lily’s part, it hit him right in the face. Staggering backwards, James wiped the snow off his face. Their eyes locked, daring the other to make the first move.
Almost simultaneously, they both began to assemble snowballs. Lily, knowing her aim was not near as good as the quidditch captains, took refuge behind a tree. James with an armful of snowballs advanced to her hiding place. Desperately, Lily tried to make as many as possible, before realizing an advantage they had both overlooked. Drawing her wand, she began to charm the snowballs. Peeking out from behind her tree, she watched the snowballs fly out, each pelting James. Dropping his own haul, James tried to protect himself against the freezing snow. “Surrender!” he called out. Looking down, she had only one left, and decided to let it run its course, and watched as it hit James right in the stomach.
Potter, more then a little cross with the redhead, tackled her. Pinning her down, he grabbed a handful of snow and dropped it on her face. “Payback, Evans. That was cold. In more ways than one.”
Sputtering, Lily went to wipe the snow off her face before realizing her hands were pinned. James, releasing them, carefully brushed some off. Their eyes locked, before hers widened. “I’m late! I’m going to get detention This is all your fault, Potter! I’m wet!” Lily cried. James, suppressing the urge to snicker at the last comment, helped her up.
Locating her book bag, James looked over at her. “Oh, but wasn’t it just a little fun?”
Lily paused before saying, “I have to get to class, Potter.”
Cracking a smile, James replied, “I’ll see you in detention, Evans.”
