Yes Sholto! Think about it. John used to pine big time for his old commanding officer but he never dared to act on it and Sholto thought John wasn’t interested in him that way.
But Sherlock knows. He could see it in their eyes at the wedding, so many years ago now. And he knows John has been talking to Sholto through his email more and more often. Nothing out of bounds. Old friends catching up, nothing more. But Sherlock knows. He sees. He recognises.
And he plans.
He offers to invite Sholto to Baker Street, a chance for him and John to catch up properly . He even offers to go away for the night. But John won’t have it. They’re together now and he’s sure Sholto would like to meet him properly as well. After all, he is alive still because of Sherlock.
James accepts. They eat, they drink, they talk and laugh and Sherlock can see it. In both of them. Something, simmering, right underneath the surface and Sherlock feels himself being swept along.
He and Sholto, having both pining for John Watson for years and yet only one of them had the luck of winning him in the end. Only he knows what it is liked to be fully loved by John.
And Sherlock might be called selfish on occasion, for John, he would do anything. Including share.
