it's not that she's been bored in her life. it might not have been the life she thought she was going to have fifteen years ago, but it's the life she was given. it's the life she made for herself. there is nothing about raising a daughter that's boring, either.

save for the parts that are. sitting in the school pick-up line. waiting for school plays to start. watching whatever television show a two year old found entertaining. doctor's office visits.

everyone needs a hobby. or, in donna's case, at least ten thousand of them.

proseate: i can’t lose you again!

instinctive reaction is regret. always, always regret. a constant companion that follows him across time, across space. wherever and wherever he goes. ( so many goodbyes. how lonely you must be, doctor... ) it haunts him like a ghost. some horrible, ominous spectre lurking within shadows cast by a billion different suns on a billion different worlds, from the dawn of history to the end of the universe and everything inbetween.

❝ jenny— jenny, look at me. ❞ voice sounds drastically steadier than expected. once alien muscles relax, once he can swallow the deep-rooted lump in his throat. breathe in and breathe out. right hand raises, finds her shoulder and gives it a gentle squeeze. grey storm clouds gather overhead, blot out green skies stretching past the snow-capped box behind them as winds whistle and ocean waves violently crash against the rocks and cliffs far below.

❝ that isn't gonna happen. not again. i promise. ❞ can he? does he have the right after messaline? he offered jenny surefire promises then, too. promises that were ripped away in an instant. turned empty and useless. the time lord sighs, attention moving elsewhere, off to the horizon. ❝ let's get inside the TARDIS, eh? you'll catch a cold if we stay out here much longer. ❞

all at once, the stony façade that claudia's face has learnt to become breaks, rubble crumbling away as she smiles, brighter than the sun. probably. it's been a while since she saw the sun, what with all the burning to death it'd do to her. it's a lonely thing, being a vampire, even though she has louis with her...perhaps especially because he is there, present physically and yet always somewhere else, failing to see her right in front of him. but this morning, she thinks, right before she goes to bed, she's going to have such a good entry for her journal.

dear diary, today i met a lady vampire, and she was lovely, and she saw me as me.

infectious grin, bright and gleeful through the adrenaline rush of unexpected reunions, falters. fades away in an instant. a pang of guilt tugs at twin hearts, pulls him down, further and further and further. why do you need to know? in his mind, it's simple. self-explanatory. they've lost more than enough time. missed far too many firsts. new galaxies, new worlds. even the most mundane experiences witnessed through fresh eyes. the doctor hangs his head, looks up again. meets her piercing gaze. both arms bring jenny in, pull her into a big hug. ❝ d'you seriously have to ask? of course i do. of course i need — want — to know what you've been up to. i'm your old man, yeah? it's about time we did some catching up. ❞
