8. Slow loris - Big eyes, slow deliberate movements and massive cute factor that was amplified in a viral video make the slow loris a highly sought exotic pet. But being nocturnal, venomous and with eyes that hurt when in contact with bright lights, this primate was not made for domesticated life with humans. They search for food at night from trees. These sensitive animals face extremely high mortality rates when trafficked, due to starvation, dehydration and infections from dental health injuries, as their venomous teeth are clipped. “To the person who caught the baby goliath grouper living on a rock ledge across from my canal:

That critically endangered fish was protected by law because of how slowly he grows and reproduces. That grouper, which couldn't have been more than 40 pounds, could have grown up to be 800 pounds and we truly don't know how long he could have lived but scientists estimate it could be 50 years or more. He won't get to do that though. The animal you killed, I had been visiting him almost every day. I had named him Marvin and he let me get inches away from him. He would approach me with timid curiosity each time I came to the hole he was living in. He was an intelligent animal, and a species I have worked with. They can learn hand signals, and if they are tame they like the inside of their mouths and gills to be tickled. In many ways, they behave like dogs. I hope someday you feel helpless and scared like he must have felt before you ended his valuable life. His life was just as important to him as yours is to you.

I am not against people eating animals. After all, we are animals ourselves and they eat one another. However, evolution has given us intelligence and we need to use that intelligence to behave sustain-ably. I am tired of seeing reefs with no big grouper because of spear fishermen. I am frustrated by seeing huge southern stingrays with their tails carelessly lobbed off by fishermen, leaving them defenseless. More and more I am pulled to wanting to dedicate my life to protect these voiceless victims from humans who think that killing them is a fun pastime.”
