Sans smiled tensely as Undyne dropped Papyrus off. He and Undyne didn't talk to each other. In fact, they would probably have never come near each other if not for Papyrus. Sans had kept his secrets well enough that he had no doubts that Papyrus thought Undyne was safe to bring home. He didn't say much to her before ushering Papyrus inside and shutting the door. Papyrus gave Sans an odd look. "WHY DID YOU NOT LET UNDYNE COME INSIDE, BROTHER?" he asked. "didn't want the house to smell fishy." Sans shrugged. "THEN WHY DO YOU NOT COME WITH ME TO TRAIN?" "i don't wanna walk that far." "THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. YOU CAME TO GET ME WHEN I CALLED YOU." "papyrus, i'd walk forever if it would keep you safe and happy." "BUT IT WOULD MAKE ME HAPPY IF YOU WOULD COME AND AT LEAST /WATCH/ ME TRAIN." Sans looked away. "sorry, but i don't think it's a good idea…" "WHY? IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG?" "just drop it, papyrus." he huffed. "WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO HIDE FROM ME?!" "nothing." Sans said darkly, hoping that, like usual, it would end the discussion. He didn't usually try to pull rank. "THIS IS NOT 'NOTHING', BROTHER!" "papyrus, if you don't stop right now, y… you're grounded!" Papyrus gave Sans a furious look and suddenly Sans was on the other end of the room, the bone Papyrus was about to pin Sans with striking empty air. "SANS! YOU CAN'T GROUND ME!" he spat. "yeah, i can. i'm your big brother." Sans said evenly. Papyrus swung again, but Sans was now on the second floor. "would you quit doing that already?" "YOU CAN'T GROUND ME IF YOU'RE AFRAID OF ME." Papyrus said darkly just before the realization hit. Sans stiffened at the odd look on Papyrus's face. "YOU… WHY /ARE/ YOU AFRAID OF ME? ARE YOU ALSO AFRAID OF UNDYNE? IS THAT WHY YOU REFUSE TO JOIN ME IN TRAINING?" "i'm not scared of you, papyrus." "YES, YOU ARE! IT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING!" "…there are only three things i'm scared of… you aren't one of them…" Papyrus gave Sans a determined look. "THEN PROVE IT, BROTHER." Sans sensed magic forming under him and dodged just in time to avoid a bone attack. He did his best to defend himself with his own bone attacks, but with his almost non-existent defense and attack, all it was able to do was buy him time. It wasn't long before he ended up teleporting into his room, just to avoid ending up dead at his little brother's hands. Papyrus, however, wasn't giving up any time soon. Sans ended up pinned in place by blue bones. Papyrus had him trapped, in every sense of the word. "WOWIE! SANS, YOU'RE REALLY GOOD!" Papyrus said proudly. Sans just held perfectly still, feeling his magic forming tears. Papyrus frowned, guilt nipping the edges of his mind. "BUT… WHY AREN'T YOU MOVING? MY BLUE ATTACK DOESN'T DO VERY MUCH DAMAGE…" "y-you wanna know what i was keeping from you…? cause…cause once you know, there's no going back…" Sans warned solemnly. "BROTHER… YES, I WANT TO KNOW!" "…i've only got 1 hp, 1 attack, and 1 defense… if i move right now, i'll die." Papyrus's eye sockets widened in horror and the blue bones were gone instantly. Sans dropped exhaustedly to the floor. "SANS… Y-YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN KEEPING THAT FROM ME! I COULD HAVE KILLED YOU!" "…i know… i just wanted you to think i was more than a useless bag of bones… like i'm not so damn fragile that you should avoid feeling attached to me because every goddamn second could be my last…" Sans said stiffly, seeming to somehow shrink under Papyrus's stare. "SANS… I COULD HAVE KILLED YOU…" Papyrus said darkly. "YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO HIDE SOMETHING LIKE THAT FROM ME." "i'm not as fragile as i seem, papyrus!" "NO, YOU'RE JUST ON THE VERGE OF DYING IF YOU FALL DOWN THE STAIRS OR STUB YOUR TOE OR-" "i'm not fragile!" "WELL YOU DEFINITELY SEEM LIKE IT!" Sans disappeared. Papyrus vented his frustration by filling the walls with bones and screaming. Sans sat deep in the woods, outside a big door, with at least eight floating, dog-like skeleton heads. "i'm not fragile…" he said dejectedly while the blasters whined and tried to lift his spirits a bit. While it didn't help, he pet each one to express his gratitude, glad they at least tried to cheer him up. "he doesn't have any right to act like he's in charge now… he doesn't even know how to summon a single gaster blaster." he mumbled sulkily. "let alone use real blue magic." Papyrus sat on the floor of the living room, already terrified that something could have happened to his brother while Sans was out there somewhere. There was no way for him to know. Idly, he felt frustrated with himself for the things he had said to Sans. They had been uncalled for and had quite obviously upset him. Sighing, he headed for the door, intending to go looking for Sans. Instead, he ended up having to fight the door open just to get out of the house, the blizzard currently raging on just outside making it much more difficult and much more worrying. Sans frowned as the wind picked up and started throwing snow everywhere. He should have gone back home hours ago. What if Papyrus started getting hungry, or lonely, or… He frowned as his blasters seemed to suddenly become far more active. Sending them all back, he summoned two larger ones, climbing atop one and letting it take him wherever the source of their distress was. Papyrus was trudging in the snow, clearly unable to see with the snow having filled his eye sockets. Sending the other blaster down to his brother, he watched worriedly, afraid that Papyrus could have gotten sick. The blaster gently lifted Papyrus in its mouth, keeping the lankier skeleton warm, but it soon became clear that Papyrus wasn't happy about this. Sans winced as a bone suddenly pieced the poor dog-skull beast, turning it to dust and taking some of Sans's hp with it, but he quickly used his blue magic to safely put Papyrus in front of their house. Sans gathered some of the dust before joining Papyrus. "you killed it…" he muttered crossly, shuffling inside. "SANS! I WAS VERY WORRIED WHEN I WAS UNABLE TO FIND YOU AT GRILLBY'S!" Papyrus cried, hugging Sans tight. "Easy there, bro. …i'm not at 100%." Sans warned, allowing Papyrus to look at his stats. Papyrus eased up, instead gently raising Sans so Sans's head and neck were partly over his shoulder. "bro… what are you…" Sans began to ask before falling fast asleep. Papyrus was surprised but simply 'nyeh'ed in relief. Undyne knocked aggressively on the door. Papyrus winced, looking at Sans worriedly, but opened the door. "HELLO, UNDYNE. I AM NOT ABLE TO TRAIN WITH YOU TODAY. I AM SORRY." he said meekly. Undyne frowned. "Your brother tell you not to go today?" she asked sharply. Papyrus looked hurt. "WELL, YES, IN A WAY, BUT-" "You know, you don't have to listen to him. Just put him on the couch and come on." Undyne pressed, following Papyrus in step for step, backing him up against the couch. "UNDYNE, STOP!" Papyrus shouted, afraid of Undyne potentially killing Sans. Sans chose that moment to wake up, not wasting a second teleporting onto the ground. "undyne, i thought we agreed you'd stay out of my house…" he said warningly. "I thought you said you wouldn't try to stop your brother from training." she hissed. "i didn't. i just told him why i couldn't go with him. and why i avoid you so much." Sans shrugged. "Oh yeah? WELL I'M TAKING PAPYRUS TO GO TRAIN! AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME!" Sans's right eye socket lit up in a glow of blue and occasional flashes of yellow. "you wanna bet?" he said, smirking. With a snap of his fingers, the blue magic pinned Undyne to the ground. "you're blue now." he shrugged. "it's one of my special skills." "What… is this!? I can barely move!" Undyne yelled, actually seeming frightened for once. "like i just said, you're blue now. so i'm gonna give you one last chance to leave." "I'M NOT LEAVING UNTIL-" "bye then." he said simply, flinging her out the door with a dismissive wave of his hand. He shut the door. "papyrus, we're gonna need to hide. but i got a plan." he started, turning to look at his younger but taller brother. He chuckled at the awed look on Papyrus's face. "yeah, i know." he shrugged, taking Papyrus's arm. "close your eyes, bro. don't want you to get sick." he warned before bringing Papyrus through one of his shortcuts and into Hotland. "WOWIE, SANS! I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD FIGHT THAT WELL!" Papyrus almost squealed. "i don't usually fight." he shrugged. "WHY NOT?" "why would i? what if i needed to protect you but used up all my magic to fight someone for fun?" he asked seriously. Papyrus stared at Sans for a long moment. "YOU DON'T FIGHT BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR MAGIC?" "exactly. not to mention, it's one of the dumbest things i could waste my magic on. like i told you earlier, i have just the one hp. one wrong move, that's it for me." "BUT YOU FOUGHT UNDYNE." "remember how i told you there's only three things that scare me?" "YES!" "i'm scared of losing you. i'm scared of you getting hurt. and i'm scared of not being around to protect you." Papyrus felt something inside him break. Sans wasn't scared of anything but Papyrus getting hurt or worse. Sans wasn't even really afraid of dying. Papyrus felt his soul become heavy at the realization that Sans must have had to get used to the idea of his life being one misstep away from ending at all times. "SANS…" he said mournfully. "relax, papyrus. you wanna sit down? undyne wouldn't dare come here. it's too hot for her." he chuckled. "she doesn't wanna get fried, after all." "SANS, PLEASE…" "sorry, was just trying to lighten the mood." he said a little sheepishly. "IT'S ALRIGHT, JUST PLEASE NO MORE PUNS…" he pleaded. "no promises there, bro." he shrugged. "but i'll try." Papyrus nodded. "SANS… HOW LONG DO YOU THINK WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT FOR UNDYNE TO STOP…?" "i dunno. i asked alphys to talk undyne down some." he said honestly. "OH. GOOD IDEA." Papyrus commented happily. A few hours later, a loud and sudden yell split the air. Sans was on guard instantly, setting up a thick barrier of bone, then teleporting himself and Papyrus to somewhere they might be able to ambush Undyne. Papyrus suddenly screamed, and Sans immediately checked him over. A golden spear had struck Papyrus in the back. Sans felt the surge of magic and tried to restrain himself a bit, but instead latched on to Undyne's soul, starting a battle. "Y o u h u r t P a p y r u s." he said darkly, eyes empty and somehow now absolutely terrifying. "Sans… You… You only have one hp." Undyne said harshly, horrified, suddenly starting to imagine how many different ways she could have accidentally killed Sans. "It's a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing. Flowers are blooming…" he said in a deeper voice than his usual. He eyed Undyne, who shuddered under his scrutiny. "On days like this, fish like you…" A bright, blue circle appeared in his left eye as magic began to build. "S H O U L D B E B U R N I N G I N H E L L." His magic wrapped around Undyne's soul and he began slamming her into the cave walls, pinning her in place just long enough to hold her against his bone attacks. Undyne's turn, she simply tried to retreat from the battle. "Sans, I don't want to kill you!" she said desperately. "S H O U L D H A V E T H O U G H T O F T H A T B E F O R E Y O U H U R T M Y B R O T H E R." he said somehow more darkly. Undyne felt her sins crawling on her back. "Y o u a r e g o i n g t o h a v e a B A D T I M E." Somehow, Sans's magic became even more powerful, giving Undyne the agonizing impression that Sans might crush her very soul with just his magic. He raised his left hand in the air and 8 to 10 gaster blasters circled Undyne. He lowered his hand, palm pointing directly at Undyne, and the blasters fired one after another, taking down Undyne's hp rapidly. Papyrus's eyes widened as the realization sunk in. If he didn't get involved soon, Sans, despite only being able to inflict one damage at a time, would kill Undyne. He crept closer, instinctively scared, and noticed the sweat pouring off Sans's skull. His soul sank, recognizing the sheer terror for what it was. Sans had just had to confront one of his very few fears. This wasn't just a fight for his brother, this was survival. This was fighting against his fears and nightmares. This was /war/. "SANS, STOP!" Papyrus cried, running to block his brother's line of sight. Sans growled softly, stepping back, but Papyrus stayed close. "YOU DON'T HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING! PLEASE!" "I t ' s n o t e n o u g h. S h e h a s n ' t l e a r n e d h e r l e s s o n y e t." Sans said monotonously, as if stuck in a waking nightmare. Papyrus felt Sans would have appreciated the comparison for its irony if Sans wasn't currently so lost in his panic and fury at the moment. "SHE HAS ALREADY SURRENDERED, SANS! …IT'S ENOUGH." he pleaded, gently gripping Sans's shoulders. "I WILL BE FINE. I DID NOT GET BADLY HURT. PLEASE, BROTHER…" Sans's eyes went dark and empty, the blue-yellow flickers fading to nothingness. "I LOVE YOU, BRO, NO BONES ABOUT IT." he joked awkwardly, hoping the lameness of it would help calm Sans down. "heh… nice one bro…" Sans chuckled tiredly, dropping to his knees. One of the blasters zipped over, startling Papyrus a bit, and worked the tip of its muzzle under Sans's arms to help him stay upright. "thanks, bud…" he sighed breathlessly. The blaster made a worried sound similar to a big dog. "just tired. i'll be okay." Papyrus looked between the blaster and Sans. "WHY HAVE YOU NOT CANCELLED THE ATTACK?" he asked curiously. "it's not just an attack. they're like dogs. i just use magic to summon them and then they amplify my magic to fire their attacks. takes a lot to summon one. kinda went a little overboard." he said sheepishly. "i summoned all the small ones." "SANS? HOW ARE YOU FEELING?" Papyrus asked worriedly. "my eye hurts and i'm exhausted. second we get home, i'm going to bed." he said honestly with a shrug. Papyrus looked Sans over for a minute. "I'M GOING TO GO CHECK ON UNDYNE." he said simply, giving the blaster supporting Sans a look, which it returned. He hurried over to Undyne, who was on the ground. "UNDYNE? ARE YOU ALRIGHT?" he asked, offering her a hand. She moved to take it and almost all the blasters immediately swarmed in preparation to protect Papyrus. He was a little surprised but didn't complain. "I…I'll be fine, Papyrus." Undyne assured him, not accepting the offered hand for fear of setting off the blasters. "But… why didn't you tell me your brother had 1 hp?" she asked, a slightly annoyed look in her eye. "I HAD ONLY FOUND OUT EARLIER TODAY. SANS AND I HAD A BIT OF A FALLING OUT AND HAD JUST FINISHED MAKING UP WHEN YOU CAME." he explained simply. "AND IT SEEMED LIKE SOMETHING SANS WANTED TO KEEP SECRET." "Oh." Undyne mumbled, blushing in her embarrassment. "I WAS NOT GOING TO QUIT TRAINING, I ONLY INTENDED TO TAKE TODAY AND POSSIBLY TOMORROW OFF TO TALK WITH SANS ABOUT IT." he added. Undyne looked incredibly ashamed for a few minutes before frowning. "So you'd never sparred with Sans before?" "NO. THOUGH NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING. HE ALWAYS SAID IT WAS A WASTE OF HIS ENERGY." he shrugged. "Hm… Well, he's got pretty low stats…" she mumbled. "YES, BUT THAT'S NOT REALLY WHY HE DOESN'T…" Papyrus looked a bit sheepish. "HE'S AFRAID OF ME GETTING HURT…" Undyne felt more of her sins crawling on her back. "Oh…" she said meekly. "WILL YOU BE ABLE TO GET HOME SAFELY ON YOUR OWN?" he asked, eyeing her. "Yeah. The riverperson isn't far from here. If nothing else, I can cool off with the river water." she assured him. "OH. ALRIGHT. I'M GOING TO HELP SANS HOME. HE IS VERY TIRED RIGHT NOW." "Alright… Tell him I'm sorry for… ya know…" "i know." Sans chuckled, perched atop a blaster ridiculously larger than the ones he had summoned earlier. "SANS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" he asked. "one of the little guys got me some ketchup to help me recover my magic. i used the boost to send them all back and summon the big guy." he chuckled. "i call him the dadster gaster blaster." A Cheshire-esque grin spread across Sans's face as both Papyrus and the big blaster whined. Papyrus and Undyne were settled atop the blaster with Sans, the blaster calmly floating through hallways and corridors until they reached Undyne's house, at which point it froze in place. Sans had fallen asleep, leaving the blaster uncertain of what it was supposed to do. Any attempt made by Undyne to move Sans resulted in sudden, instinctual fury. The blaster itself seemed surprised by its own aggression. However, when Papyrus made to move Sans, there was no hostility in the least. Sans woke up on a couch. "huh?" he asked dazedly, looking around. "GOOD MORNING, SANS. ONCE WE REACHED UNDYNE'S HOUSE, YOU FELL ASLEEP. YOUR…AH… PET? DID NOT APPROVE OF UNDYNE TOUCHING YOU…" "oh… well, they're connected to me on a…really personal level, to be honest… remember that blizzard?" "YES… OH…" he said sheepishly. "still gotta have the funeral…" Papyrus suddenly felt winded, despite his lack of lungs. "F-FUNERAL?" "yeah. you killed it. it turned into dust." he said warily, feeling suddenly worried. His sockets widened as Papyrus abruptly burst into tears. "whoa. hey, easy there, pap. it'll be okay." he tried to comfort his brother. "it'll be…heh…done and dusted before you know it." he joked, the tears stopping in favor of permitting a glare. "besides, it just means a stronger one'll show up in a few months." he added with a shrug. "when one dies, the magic inside drifts for a while and gains more magic and then forms an even stronger one." Sans put a little dust on his hoodie and a little on Papyrus's scarf, then gave the rest to the other blasters before sending them all back where they belonged. Papyrus was weepy for a while but Sans took it in stride. A few months later, Sans summoned a new blaster, this one having one blue eye and one orange. "hey, paps. looks like it took a little bit of your magic with it." he chuckled. Papyrus just went weepy again. The blaster rumbled and nuzzled Papyrus's hip. Sans patted Papyrus's back. "hey, you two bond, okay? maybe you'll be able to summon your blasters."
