#Repost @justicefwdva with @make_repost ・・・ URGENT: Earned Sentence Credit legislation is at risk, as Virginia legislators teeter on the edge of keeping their promises or falling prey to deceptive fear mongering. Unconscionable. And our Executive Director Brad Haywood, Sheba Williams of Nolef Turns Inc., Shawn Weneta of ACLU of Virginia & others are coming together SUNDAY MAY 22nd at 7PM on Twitter to break down the dishonest, cruel, anti-democratic efforts this past week to reneg on promises of hope to those who’ve paid their debt to society. HERE: https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1OyJADpwNmyGb Legislation passed in 2020, and slated for enactment in July 2022, further codifies the system for earned sentence credits that do already exist in Department of Corrections policy and incentivizes good behavior. Currently, individuals can earn days off their sentence for good behavior. Once the reformed law goes into effect some inmates will earn more days off their sentence for good behavior and participation in programs. Texas and South Carolina, among other states, have made similar reforms to reduce prison populations over the past several years. Neither state has seen any public safety issues from these changes, and both have seen significant savings in the state budget. Research also shows that long sentences do not deter crime, but allowing people to reduce their sentence by improving themselves will actually increase public safety. This change will also help address the disproportionate incarceration of Black men in the Commonwealth. #valeg #protectprogressmade https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd30ncZlTp_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
