"The son of the cloud god, Phrixus, also meaning "thrilling, causing shivers", is the name of Provis' 2nd EP for DTR and sums up the approach of the Brisbane based producer. Steeped in southern rap and f#cked up club bangers of the new school, Phrixus is a lofty and wistful journey, ascending Provis' trill beats into a dark and restrained "dead-zone", coloured with R'n'B sentiments, and a nod to soundtracks of science-fiction past.
The EP opens with the preverbal gunshot of "Dark Purple", a neon jam that breaks apart and rebuilds before you've realised you're banging your head. "Take Lead" maintains this slinky club energy and bridges the EP into chopped and screwed r'n'b territory with "Finest", touching on Uk bass and clipped Garage vocals. "One" ends the EP on a cloud, siren vocals echo through rising synths and glimpse an undead bass-line, bringing the journey to a close on a reflective bitter-sweet note." - Dubtemple Records
