Hospital rooms are proximal spaces. Its all very odd and overwhelming and you dont feel real but only because its so explicitly concretely Somewhere Else while being as tangible as your own bedroom. The emergency department waiting room is a liminal space between being hospitalized and being free, a nowhere space where people linger with differing levels of illness as they wait for permission to move on or go home
