Hi there! Can i tell you a little secret?! Ok, come here, come here!

[background information] I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t know that many neurodivergent people irl (or at least that you can tell they’re neurodivergent, given that a lot learn to mask, and can be very neurotypical passing). In fact, I only know one! Which I met when I started at this new school I’m going to! And I have this friend who is trans. Therefore, in WeBex calls (we use Webex instead of Zoom cuz who fuckin knows why???) he doesn’t put his dead name, and puts the name he’s more comfortable with instead. And the autistic kid had a class with him, and when they noticed the name change, they asked! Why do you go by [prefered name] rather then [deadname]? And my friend got a little upset.

Well, here’s the secret! Neurodivergent people, or autistic people in this scenario, have a little more trouble understanding things then the “average” neurotypical person. And they have a little more trouble understanding boundaries, both physically, and asking certain questions, like this one. So when they asked why my friend changed his name, they didn’t mean any harm! They were simply curious, and in situations like this, it’s best you just explain it to them! If you do not feel comfortable, or need established trust, in which you might not have, depending on what the relationship is that you have with this person, simply tell them that! Say it’s something personal you’d rather not share!

The point of this is: be more patient with neurodivergent people, and whatever you do don’t A) lash out at them! This only makes the situation worse, and can be extremely damaging for their mental health, and B) don’t ignore them! If they ask you such personal questions, just try to explain why you don’t want to tell them the answer, but never think that they mean you harm! Which brings me to my next point.

I know that neurodiverncy and disability DO NOT EXCUSE ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR, but if you are in an abusive situation with a neurodivergent/disabled person, do not hesitate to call them out on it! Tell them why they shouldn’t do that! Teach them instead of brushing it aside. Because if you pretend it’s not happening, you’re telling them (and this applies to neurotypical and able bodied people as well) that what they’re doing is ok, and there’s nothing wrong with their actions and words (becuase verbal abuse is still abuse).

I needed you guys to hear this, but given that I am neurotypical*, you might not want to hear this from me so there is this girl on TikTok who is neurodivergent and I wanted you guys to hear her side on this, as a neurodivergent person! Here is the link to her account, PLEASE go check it out, she brings light on important issues like this one, and it doesn’t hurt to take a little bit of time out of your day to educate yourself!!!

*added the little asterisk because I, myself, are struggling with identity, and I might be neurodivergent (add/adhd) but I can’t say that I am becuase I have not been professionally diagnosed, therefore it’s a simple self diagnosis.
