Today is World Psoriasis Day!
I just wanted to show my support, spread some awareness, and let other psoriasis sufferers know that they are not alone. Psoriasis can be a challenging condition to live with, whether you have moderate plaque psoriasis or severe psoriatic arthritis, and it’s always comforting to know that someone else out there understands what you’re going through. I think it is always important to spread some positivity and hope.
Most people think that psoriasis is only a physical condition, but that isn’t always the case. Many people with psoriasis also suffer from mental/emotional problems, such as depression, because of their skin condition. It isn’t always easy when your skin and/or joints are in pain, when people stare at you, when taking care of your skin costs so much money and takes up a lot of time, when other people don’t truly understand how you’re feeling. Psoriasis can take its toll both physically and emotionally.
Over the years, I have struggled with psoriasis both physically and emotionally. Dealing with my skin has always been a challenge for me. I would avoid social situations, and wear clothing that would hide my skin. Even though my psoriasis has gotten progressively worse within the past couple of years, I’ve decided to make a change in the way that I look at my skin. Self love and acceptance can be difficult, especially when you have a visible skin condition, but it is well worth the effort. Over the past year, my outlook on my psoriasis has really improved. I don’t worry about what my skin looks like as much, I care less about what other people will say/think, I wear the clothes that I feel like wearing regardless of what my skin looks like, and it feels great. A little self confidence goes a long way.
So, for any psoriasis sufferers out there who are having a tough time: I hope you know that you are not alone. I hope you find the courage and confidence to be comfortable in your own skin; it might not be today, or tomorrow, but I hope someday you finally feel good about yourself and your skin. You are worth the fight. Every single person deserves to feel beautiful in their own skin.
