Happy Monday and 5 Questions with Ps & Qs!
It might be a gloomy Monday morning here in Philadelphia, BUT I have 5 questions answered from the lovely Joseph Lardizabal of Philly's premiere menswear store Ps & Qs (www.psandqs.com)
Please check out this exclusive interview with me! (girlinabowtie) And if you are in Philly anytime soon please do yourself a favor and stop by. Tell them Laura sent you. Also check out the website for so many goodies if you can't make it to the store front!
An enormous thanks to Joseph for answering 5 questions with Girl In A Bow Tie!
1. When and where did Ps & Qs start? It's honestly been a couple years in the making. Between my partners and I, we're from New York and Philadelphia, but we always recognized a void in the latter. You could travel north (NY, Boston, Rhode Island) or south (DC, Virginia, Atlanta) of city and see that all these other places have these really great and progressive shops for men. But then you would get to Philly and it was mainly streetwear. Nothing against it whatsoever, but what about a shop for guys that didn't necessarily subscribe to that? I think more than anything we wanted to establish some sort of balance in the city. Yes, push a more forward aesthetic and lifestyle, but really just fill a void. From the clothes to the books we push, we truly put a lot of consideration into what we're bringing to the table. Not to sound cliche, but we didn't do this with the intent of making out like bandits. There are a lot more lucrative business models we could have pursued. But this was an area we were particularly interested in and passionate about, and thought we would try and do something for like-minded people in Philadelphia. Besides, there's no reason for this city to not have something like a Ps & Qs! We're not in the middle of nowhere. We're a major port city and there's really no excuse as to why we don't have more boutiques in the same vein as the ones you would find in New York, Los Angeles or even Boston for that matter.
2. Do YOU mind your Ps & Qs? We certainly try! While the meaning of that saying is relative, the underlying message is always to be your best in whatever it is you're doing. So as a boutique, being on our Ps & Qs means providing the best quality goods and service for our customers. For me personally, staying on my ps & qs means really trying to practice what I preach. Minding my manners, not being ratchet, having respect for others and attempting to at least look and smell decent in the process (on that note, the term "decent" is also relative!).
3. How do you choose what brands to carry in the store and the website? It's actually quite easy. We only carry products and brands that we use, and not to sound corny, but believe in, on a personal level. From the fashionable brands like Gant Rugger and Norse Projects, to the functional products from Patagonia and Topo Designs, these are all things we already had in our lives, spent our own money on and still get excited about. If it doesn't speak to us or inform our personal decisions in any way, we don't carry it. We also think about what's already available within the area and again, filling any voids we see and introducing new ways of life that we feel people might be into, if they had access to it.
4. Do you plan on making more items for the Ps & Qs label? Short answer, yes. As to what and when, we're just letting that happen organically. Currently we do very limited runs of tees, sweatshirts, jackets - all the basics - for people that are down with what we're doing and want to support. But our focus for now is definitely on the new brands and lifestyles we're bringing into the city and helping our customers to be well-rounded individuals. But for sure, if there is a demand, we are more than happy to supply.
5. Where do you want the company to be in 3-5 years? Right here on South Street! Don't get me wrong, we have aspirations to do great things, but 5 years from now I think we would be super stoked for Ps & Qs to still be standing strong in the heart of South Philadelphia. Because not only would that mean we're performing well, but that would also mean that our goal of pushing a more progressive aesthetic was really resonating with the local communities. I went to college here, my partners are from here and grew up in this neighborhood. So we all care deeply for this city and our doing our part to uplift it. We want to do as much as we can to bring about a Philadelphia renaissance.
Thanks again! And be sure to keep checking girl in a bow tie for more 5 questions!
