What first really got you into DirkHal? Why these two sons? More importantly; DO YOU HAVE MANY FEELS FOR MY POOR SWEET SMOL SON HAL? DO YOU THINK HE DESERVES THE BEST LIFE WITH MY OTHER POOR SWEET TOL SON DIRK? *coughs* Please write DirkHal fics.
I’m writing a DirkHal, first off, to get that out of the way.
The main reason I came to ship DirkHal is I was always absolutely fascinated by the differences between them and how for “the same guy” they really weren’t the same at all? The first fic I ever wrote for public consumption heavily featured AR coming into his own and defining himself as a person and that stuck with me. By the time I wrote my Brobot/Hal fic An Error Has Occurred I was enamoured with the idea of how Dirk’s splinters could flourish into very distinct people while coming from the same core, and in a lot of my personal writings that had never made it out onto my blog I’d explore that.
By the time of Error up there I was already shipping Dirk and Hal together mainly because they have a great dynamic and I really liked pushing Dirk’s character when he had to face up to the fact Hal wasn’t him, that they weren’t the same, and that within the pressure-cooker of being so alone in canon Hal was one of his main routes for exploration. This branched out into AUs, and headcanons, and constantly thinking of new ways they’d bounce off each other or spark against one another in the same breath as they’d hate to actually be alone as they claimed to want.
I think the main thing that really got me into this ship is that both of them need both redemption and accountability, and really the other is the best person to give them both. They won’t forgive each other for what they’ve respectively done but they will move on from it, and better themselves, and be it sassy and supportive or cynical and possessive, they’ll do it far better together. Their relationship isn’t good in the way some others are, it’s messy and complicated and can be very bitter and twisted, but it’s full of things to explore and full of really interesting thoughts on what it is to be alive, to be an individual, and to be human.
Black or Red or everything in between, I enjoy their dynamic and I really enjoy making them face up to the fact they’ve made terrible mistakes they can’t run from forever, and also that neither of them is who they thought they were, and especially not a reflection of the other.
