I guess that makes sense. My car could be just fine, though, since all that's really damaged is the bumper and rear quarter panel. I sucked it up and called the repair shop that made the estimate and they told me that the insurance company didn't want to pay for replacing the quarter panel, hence the total. My guess is that if they hadn't wanted to replace the quarter panel, I wouldn't be in this place.

I did look up KBB values for my car. Unfortunately, since my car is old and has seen many miles, the value it gave me and the value the insurance company quoted me were pretty much the same. The estimate was for just a couple hundred shy of that amount, so I can see why they'd prefer to total it. They'll have to pay out less, in the end, if I choose to keep my car and repair it myself.
