I was commissioned by a friend to draw Pteromalus cassotis. I will start drawing the several suggestions that I was given by you folks! I think I will draw Trissolcus japonicus next, like someone recommended. Then I will continue on the suggestion list. Thanks again, everyone!

look at this lisa frank xenomorph ass freak. Heydenia sp.

upon spotting a little atom of a creature on an oak gall, i rushed over hoping it'd be an emerging gall wasp, something i've never seen before. instead it turned out to be this little chalcid (probably Pteromalidae), who was very reluctant to leave the gall she was perching on. as a parasitoid, it's possible that either she was looking for a spot to oviposit or had just recently emerged herself. whatever the reason, i never would've been able to casually photograph a 2mm long flying bug if she hadn't been so attached to that gall

the hymenopteran family Pteromalidae is a hyper-diverse (probably polyphyletic) group of parasitoid wasps. there's currently thousands of described species but with how understudied parasitoid wasps are, there's probably actually a shitload more than that. anyway most species are somewhere around 1-3mm long, often barely discernible without a microscope. but i read somewhere that they range up to almost 50mm, about 2 inches, which is huge for any insect and positively gargantuan for a pteromalid. so of course i had to go and look up what the biggest one was. turns out it's Doddifoenus wallacei and while a big chunk of that 50 mm length is ovipositor, it's still way less than i expected!
