Book review: Rainbow! by Gloom and Sunny
Second read, I don't remember where I got it. It took me like a couple hours. It's a graphic novel and was published in 2024.
Main characters in most to least favorite: Boo, Mimi, Milo, Clarice.
"What are you doing?" "Catching a star so it doesn't float away." "Okay. Did you get it?" "Mhm."
As a psychotic person, Boo is really relatable. I'm not sure if she's intentionally psychotic (it says explicitly she has trouble distinguishing daydreams from reality, but the way this is presented can feel between deep thoughts to hallucinations). I like that this isn't treated as really scary, although the ways the other characters talk about her in regards to that is sometimes demeaning.
Every outfit Boo wears is pink white and blue, in memories of her younger self her face is blacked out, and she doesn't want to tell Mimi her "real" name. I know what you are.
I love the art style a lot. It would be so much better though if the hair type options were more varied than thin straight hair, thick straight hair, or locs.
Mimi is really cool. I wish there were more scenes with her, I think since they're friends now she'll hopefully be more prominent in the second volume.

The balance between silly and serious is really nice, they don't take away from each other at all, which I really appreciate.
Yessss a fat main character and the storyline isn't even about her being fat!! And she has stretch marks!!
For the tests, it passes all but the Ali Nahdee test because it doesn't qualify for it.
