You woke up early on May 5th. It was your boyfriend, Mitch’s, birthday. He was sleeping peacefully in the bed, his snores silent. It was 4:30 and you crept out of your shared bedroom into the spare.
Upon reaching the spare bedroom your feet padded over to the closet. Opening it were wrapped gifts, streamers, signs and love letters you had mad for Mitch. The thought of him waking up to see everything made you smile. You pulled all of the supplies out of the closet and brought them onto the kitchen counter. The pile in your arms was tall and you needed to walk slow to ensure you didn’t walk into a wall.
That’s when you heard it. Mitch’s dewy has hit the floor and you could hear the floorboards groan in response. It was 5:19 and he was usually only awake at 5:45 to 6. He let out a very audible yawn. You could picture him doing is stretch and you hurriedly finished icing ‘Happy Birthday Mitchy’ on the cake in white. You frowned. The icing wasn’t as smooth as you would have liked it. You waited with anticipation for Mitch but he never came out.
Your brows furrowed. “Well where are you Mitchy”, you whispered squinting your eyes as if that would suddenly bring him into view.
“Behind you”, he whispered in your ear, his voice low. You jumped.
Turning quickly you put your hands on his chest. “Where did you come from”?
“When your head was down icing the cake”, he smiled. His chin went to rest on your shoulder as he looked at the blue mess before you. His smile grew with the passing seconds. Mitch’s hands snaked around your waist and he kissed your cheek.
“It looks great babe”, he said happily. Your eyes narrowed at the cake.
“Do not lie to me Marner, that is a blue mess and you and I know it”, you said, turning in your spot. The second you made eye contact with him he burst out laughing. He backed up and put his hands on the counter behind him, maintaining eye contact.
“You look like a smurf babe”, he howled through the laughter. He reached forward and grabbed your hands. “How are you going to go out with blue hands”.
“Ill just walk out the door and go wherever you go”, you said sarcastically. Mitch was smiling at you.
You side eyed the cake. Icing dripping down the side of it was taunting you with its sky blue colouring. Mitch looked at it and chuckled. “It is kind of bad”, he giggled.
You smiled and fisted his shirt, resting your head on his shoulder. “It is”.
Mitch put his cheek against your hair. “I love you”, he muttered, clearly still tired.
You hummed in response, your eyes fluttering shut. “Your supposed to say it back”, he mumbled. You smirked. “I’ve loved you since we were 10, and I’ll love you to infinity”.
Mitch’s chest tumbled with laughter threatening to escape him. He was such a happy person. “Are you sure you’ll love me always”?
You nodded as a response. Then Mitch laughed. “If you say so”. Then cake collided with your face. You gasped in shock as Mitch laughed uncontrollably. You opened your eyes to see he had taken a fistful of the cake and had used it as a weapon. You smiled and grabbed a fistful and threw it at him getting him in the cheek. You and Mitch were engulfed in a cake war. Cake and icing were thrown at each other as your laughter filled the apartment.
He reached for your hands and entwined your fingers with his. He pulled you close. “I just really love you”.
He was sincere with every word he said. You cupped his cake covered face and smiled. “I love you Mitchy, happy birthday”. He craned his neck to connect his forehead with yours.
“A happy birthday indeed”, he purred.
“Dork”.
