     “I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with that,” Akaashi said as he took off his scarf and handed it over to Kenma. “I wore the scarf as an extra precautionary measure, so I’ll be alright. Now please wear this, Kenma-san.” It sounded like he was being demanding, but this was ultimately being done out of genuine concern for his fellow setter.

       When it came to being around Kenma, he always made sure to be more perceptive of his surroundings for the sake of his friend. He was protective to say the least. This was his friend that he cared about and he knew that Kenma had more things going on than his other friends. And so he took precautions. It didn’t take long to notice where the other was staring and he felt worry bubble up in his chest. Immediately he moved closer to Kenma’s side to gently grab hold of his sleeve and tug. When his words were ignored, he only felt more worried. Tugging again and waving his hand in front of the taller’s face seemed to be his best course of action. 

        Having Kenma’s attention again, he chose not to bring the subject up again and instead gave him a big smile. “I asked if you wanted to get a snack. I’m getting hungry. And I don’t know my way around here so I need you to pick.” Hopefully removing the other from the situation and providing a distraction would be enough. It was more than he could hope for though.

✖ ┅ Kuroo’s heart clenched at the DESPAIR that leaked from Kenma’s voice. It was just so SMALL. Silently, he listened, waiting and wishing for that PAIN that he heard to leave. “Hey, it’s not anyone’s fault. You alone didn’t do anything, okay? Volleyball is a team sport, and we lose as a whole.”

He felt completely and utterly HELPLESS against Kenma’s tears. It’d become his own personal DUTY to protect his friend when they were just KIDS, eyes bright and knees SCRAPED from their adventures when the WORLD seemed too big to face alone. And at that moment, it’d all gone to hell. “Don’t cry,” he started lamely.”it’ll be okay. One game isn’t all of them, right? There will be more games and more opportunities to win. It feels like the end, but it isn’t.”

        His chest felt tighter with each passing minute until he began to feel light headed. He was no stranger to anxiety and stress but this was one of the most helpless feelings he’d had yet. Being all the way in Miyagi and unable to do anything or even know the extent of what was going on was making everything so much worse. He’d paced the length of his room, hands fidgeting and checking his phone near constantly. Worry for Kenma had become such a natural thing since becoming closer to the other setter and he’d wanted nothing but to protect him. And this was the opposite of that. 

        Calls gone unanswered and texts as well, his anxiety only grew. What could have happened to Kenma? There was only one other person that he could think of to turn to but he didn’t even know how fruitful that would be.
