The Project

Home is the river where my brother and I tried to catch a wild salmon with our bare hands.  It is the deluge of warm rain that followed me on my walk from school.  It is mountains and chicken nuggets and bluegrass music.  It is my mother, my father, my aunt, and my brother.  Without some of these things, I may be imperceptibly different, but these people and places reside next to each other in the layers of who I am.  Home is the root of the self.

What is home to you?  What city, town, river, or address holds personal significance?  In the project Journey Home, I am creating a body-size maze of acrylic panels painted with layers of maps.  I want the maps in this artwork to be from you.  You can send me a message with a special location and I will paint it into the final work.

The goal of this project is to illustrate interconnection through shared locations and hint at a universal identity.  When visitors walk through the painted translucent walls, they may find a location that holds significance to them, but also experience other places that are cherished.  In this way, Journey Home presents the world as a treasure and a place to discover; it intimates a deep connection we have to each other and the planet.  This work seeks to illuminate issues of universal understanding and appreciation.
