So sometimes sexualities and identites confuse me. How can a lesbian identify as he/him? Doesn't that contradict the definition of "lesbian?" Not tryna come off like a jerk, I'm just genuinely confused?
mm so i identify as a they/them lesbian so please understand this is a subject best explained by actual he/him lesbians, but i'll still do my best!
essentially what it boils down to is rather than pronouns being equivalent to gender, they're a part of gender expression. so he/him lesbians aren't men, they're gnc women
a lot of lesbians, myself included, have a v complicated relationship when it comes to gender bc society expects a lot of things from women and, surprise, lesbians subvert a lot of that. for me, using they/them pronouns helps alleviate some of my dysphoria especially in a social sense bc i don't have that full inner connection to womenhood, and so being referred to as a "woman" is uncomfortable for me, to say the least. that's the simplest way i can put it when it comes to my own experience w The Lesbian Experience™
and from what i've read/heard, he/him lesbians experience this same thing, though sometimes in a more extreme sense. it's most often (but not always) butches that will use he/him pronouns bc it helps alleviate any gender dysphoria they may have, as well as help express their masculine presentation.
if this doesn't make sense, or you want a more in-depth explanation, let me know! i get that it's kinda confusing, it was to me at first, but it's something important to understand imo
