During a long weekend last week, we did a Hong Kong staycation. We live in a place dotted with so many islands that even staying away from home in a place a short ferry or car ride away feels like an adventure elsewhere. We camped out at an area called Pui O, on the southern shore of Lantau Island. Despite it being just a hop away from the airport and Disneyland, the sparsely populated black sand beach, mountainous backdrop and numerous water buffalo roaming the village paths helped make it feel a world away. Our sleep in the tent was fitful as we were located near a creek that is home to many loud bullfrogs who croaked throughout the evening and we realized a food packing malfunction when it was time to BBQ for dinner; but the swimming, kayaking and small village exploring easily made up for it. As a treat to the girls for “roughing it” with us, we hit Disney on our way out - no complaints there.
