Death was a fact of life. The inevitable everyone counted on and yet grief.
Grief was hard, painful and raw. No amount of experience could fully prepare you for the gapping wound, death left you to cope with time and time again. His heart was shattering into tiny pieces but he had to keep it together long enough to help the rest of his creatures, they depended on him. They needed to be properly fed and watered, life had to carry on. Newt had to carry on. There was too much to do.
One hesitant question could not unravelling him. Not now.
“No, I’m fine,” he answered, failing to sound reassuring. His airways were constricting as he tried to suppress the wave of mourning, the tears in his eyes were already on the brink of spilling. This would not push him over the edge.
Newt knew caring for magical creatures meant that the ones he rescued could die, it was an occupational hazard. But this time got to him. Those poor snidgets had been bred, kept in captivity, starved and for what purpose? A game of Quiddich. Some stupid notion of tradition.
Earlier in the week, the ministry had sent him an urgent request to take the birds as they had seized the illegal operation that apparently supplied wealthy families who could afford to pay the premium and would likely pay the fines.
There was one bird left. Newt had done everything he could but the snidget was weak and experience told him they would not survive the night.
A tear fell down his face and he swiped it away, turning and making himself busy through bleary eyes.
Newt would not crumble. He couldn’t. He just couldn’t.
