N wanted to set up a pull-up bar outside.

He went to a welder's shop looking for a heavy-walled 1½" tubing and came home with a solid rod that's definitely not going to flex with him hanging from it. We stripped it with wire wheels down to bare metal and then he painted it with glossy clear "paint".

Used a hole saw to make holes in the 4x6s (12' long) to set the bar in; drilled ¼" holes through the wood and bar and pinned the bar in the wood with some ¼" rod to make sure it doesn't rotate.

Measured diagonals to ensure squareness, braced with 2x4s.

We drilled two 3+' deep holes in the ground and leveled their bases with some gravel. Dropped the posts with the bar into the holes, stood it mostly level, and then dumped dry ready-mix concrete into the holes along with some water (water + concrete + water + concrete + water, alternating); checked for level, used the pry bar to jostle the mixture and get it to settle in any potential voids.

Next: wait. A week. Let the concrete cure a bit. Then try it.

Total cost of materials: about $170, not including all of the tools we used (hole saw, drill bit, power drill, grinder, wire wheel, level, posthole digger, shovel, level).
