i was gonna vote for kal anyway but... paper stars?

say no more you've caught me in a paper stars mood. it'll be monstercals flavored as a treat. based off a post I made recently

John looked different as he rummaged through the Nautilus' kitchen, Rose could easily clock it. His normally hazel eyes had a vermillion hue to them, nails were suddenly sharpened to a point, scraping against swinging cupboards. Typically, the astronomer was just under six feet in stature but now he was towering a foot over her.

As they often did, her pointed fluff covered ears turned towards the subject of her intrigue. An angry sigh left John as he slammed another cupboard shut, frowning.

"Something wrong?" Rose asked, leaning against the wall, twisting her tail so that it wouldn't get crushed.

John held his hands on his hips.

"They don't have any powdered blood," he lamented, biting his lower lip, teeth sharper than they usually were.

Often, Rose forgot John was a vampire, especially as of late. He was so unlike his undead kin, in both personality and manner. She's never even seen him sucking plasma from anything alive. Sometimes she caught him sipping on a maroon filled bowl but that was it. Honestly, she did always wonder where that blood came from.

"Do they not have any back at the corral?"

He shook his head. "I checked." John gave a small scoff. "I guess angels don't have much need for it."

Her tail flicked in sympathy. She's heard dozens of horror stories from hungry vampires, how their veins run dry and their insides devour themselves in desperation. They can't starve to death but they can get very close to it.

Rose clicked her tongue, a question blooming. "When was the last time you ate?"

Shame spread over John's face, suddenly the wall looked very interesting to him. She grumbled, stepping forward.

"John?" she asked in a low tone.

"The day the Sagitta launched," he reluctantly admitted.

"John!"

"We've been busy!" he said, raising his hands defensively.

"What were you gonna do on the..." Rose's question died out as she realized the answer to John's puzzle. Her brows snapped up.

"The Ellen Austin!"

John made the same exact expression she did. A solid chunk of the crew were vampires themselves, they had to have some plasmic rations left behind. Before John could say a thing, Rose grabbed his arm and the two ran across the island, hurrying into the Austin still bobbing on the ocean. In the lower decks, they found a cask brimming with deep crimson.

In a blur, John filled up a flagon and began chugging, practically inhaling the entire thing in one fell gulp. He took a refreshing sigh, upper lip stained.

"Thank you, Rose," he said with a grin, pearly whites smeared with red. "I completely forgot that the Austin would have some."

Her heart skipped a beat, still giddy at receiving compliments from him. Pretending her cheeks weren't warm, Rose moved forward with the conversation. "Y'know, I've been wondering, why do you only drink the powdered stuff? I heard that tastes terrible."

John nodded, filling his flagon again. "It's barely filling too. But," he gazed at a middle distance for a beat, "I do not ever want to drink fresh ever again."

"Oh?" While this sounded deeply interesting, she wasn't going to pry unless he wanted her to.

Swift, John downed his drink again, smacking his tongue on the roof of his mouth, grimacing slightly.

"It just tastes so bad," he whispered to himself before focusing on Rose, his face lighting up.

"Anyways, when you first turn, you have to drink fresh," Rose nodded as he spoke, already aware of his teachings, "and the same rule applies to born vampires. Around the time puberty hits, you have this big ceremony and have your first feeding. And it has to be live and..."

That far off look returned to John, his gray gaze returning.

"And I didn't much care for it," he said in a small voice. "So, it's a bit of a rule of mine to not drink fresh again." He glanced at the cask. "No matter how bad this tastes." Yet another swig filled John's mouth.

Rose nodded solemnly. "Yeah, wolves have a similar thing but for the first time you turn." She chuckled to herself, recalling that particular full moon. "You should've seen me, I kept trying to get people on the street to play fetch with me."

The story was a bit of a lie, technically that happened to another pup who lived on her street but John didn't need to know that. Personally, Rose took to becoming a full wolf like a duck to water, Samuel was the same. The first time her skin melted into a pelt was probably among the greatest moments of her life. Unaware of her fib, his shoulders slumped a little as he, too, joined in on Rose's mirth. For the next few minutes, Rose shared more tall tales about her lycanthropic youth, erasing that gloom from John, hoping in the back of her mind that John wouldn't ask Samuel about any of this.

thinking about monstercals again. John for sure doesn't like drinking human blood and frankly I think he also struggles with animal blood. a very base instinct in him does get hungry enough to want to hunt but every time he thinks about it he gets too scared and doesn't bother. he lives off a heavy diet of powdered blood a product I've made up specifically for him. this is magic monster world I can imagine they've made like a powdered milk type shit but for blood. it tastes like ass but John would. much rather do that than drink fresh. the last time he did was when he was 13 and it was the worst day of his life

during full moons when Rose has to shift into wolf mode she has a habit of just plopping herself on John until she gets hungry and runs off. John was very confused and flustered the first time this happened and now he's just flustered

in my mind when wolves shift they just sorta lose their inhibitions so I like to think the 1st time John was hanging with the stratfords and they shifted during a full moon Rose just started being really really affectionate with him. the next morning when she remembered she nearly died with embarrassment

aough the werewolf twins... in wolf mode during full moons.to me.samuel is fairly well behaved. hes still a werewolf but hes very put together. hes playful but he never goes too far. rose goes wild. shes tearing up walls shes tackling ppl she likes (john) and licking them. she gets a bad case of the zoomies Every Time

"a wolf doesnt really want to look at you while you pet him but he wants you to pet him. hes embarrassed" werewolf rose just demmanding attention while also being upset about being looked at. john is so confused

she keeps on bumping her side into him so hard that he stumbles (he has super strength it's just Rose has even more strength) but she absolutely refuses to stare at him. for a while John thought this was just a werewolf thing but Samuel mostly ignores him in wolf mode and so he just kinda went '... oh...'
