Virgil Finlay was born on this day in 1914. Arguably the greatest artist of the pulp era, he began placing his incredibly detailed pen-and-ink drawings in Weird Tales in the mid-1930s. He created over 2600 works of art in a career that was interrupted by WWII (he served in the Pacific Theater) but otherwise continued until his death in 1971.
