Listening to your Heart
Summary: Now that Derek's human he can no longer hear his boyfriend's heartbeat. So what does he do? He finds other ways to listen to his favorite sound in the world.
One of Derek's favorite things about being a werewolf is his enhance hearing. He loves being able to hear things from a distance, being able to know when someone was sneak up on him, or when someone was near. Sure sometimes the sounds drove him crazy but he was okay with it so long as he knew what was going on around him then he did not care about the loud noises as long as he was able to draw them out then he was okay.
Now thanks to Kate, whatever she did to him, he was slowly losing his werewolf abilities. His hearing was no longer what it once was, he was no longer able to hear a mile away, all of his senses were slowly fading away and were reducing to a human's level.
Derek could not understand how humans were use hearing, seeing, or smelling this way. How did humans handle not being able to hear a mile away? Or be able to smell the different emotions on them? How where they not use to seeing in the dark with out the help of a flashlight? How were humans use to this? More importantly how was Stiles use to this.
"What are you thinking about?"
Derek was snapped of his mused as he looked down to see his boyfriend who was laying his head on Derek's chest.
His index finger was tracing patterns on his bare chest, his honey color eyes looked up to meet his gaze.
Derek just smiled as he grabbed Stiles' hand and brought it to his lips and placed a kiss on it.
"Nothing important,"
The last thing he wanted was for Stiles to worry about him.
Stiles rolled his eyes as he sat up, the moon light illuminated his body perfectly, lighting up all of his features for Derek to see.
"Derek, I know that face, you were thinking about something, now sourwolf tell me what's on that pretty little mind of yours,"
Derek rolled his eyes as he sat up, he brought his face closer to Stiles's.
"I hate it when you call me that," he said. His lips hovered an inch away from Stiles's. His eyes met Stiles and he could see his human's eye widen as his pupils dilated to a darker shade of brown. He stared down at his lips as Stiles's tongue traced those perfect cupid bow shape lips.
There was only one thing missing. The alluring sound of Stiles's heart. The lovely sound that Derek enjoyed hearing, the sound that allowed Derek to know that his mate was alive and real.
He missed that lovely lullaby that calmed him down when he was scared, worried, or stress, the beautiful melody that chased away his nightmares and always gave him a peaceful sleep.
"Derek?"
Stiles grabbed Derek's chin and raised his face so that he was looking at him. The werewolf met the eyes of his human.
"Please tell me what's wrong?"
Without warning he grabbed Stiles and pulled him to his chest. He wrapped his arms around his body as he buried his nose in the crook of his neck.
He took a giant whiff of Stiles and could still smell a hint of him, of them from their previous activities.
His hands grabbed Stiles's hips as he pulled back and looked at his mate, he might as well tell him the truth.
"I...I miss being able to hear well,"
Stiles's gaze soften as he caressed Derek's cheek and encouraged him to continue.
Taking a deep breath the werewolf continued,
"I miss many of my senses that I'm slowly losing but...I miss my hearing more but only because,"
He looked down unable to confess to him that he missed listening to his heart beat.
"Because?"
Derek didn't answer, to shy to respond to him.
"Derek whatever it is you miss tell me so that I can help you,"
"Its a bit embarrassing, you might laugh at me,"
"Derek, look at me,"
Derek did as he was told as his eyes met Stiles's who was giving him an encouraging smile.
"Nothing you say will ever make me laugh at you, I promise that whatever it is that you miss I will try and help you with as much as I possibly can,"
Derek didn't need his hearing to know that Stiles was being sincere and honest with him. He lean forward and kissed his forehead before he answered him,
"I miss my hearing, because I miss being able to hear your heart," he mumbled.
Stiles looked at Derek.
"My heart?"
Derek chuckled.
"Yeah your heart,"
Derek placed his hand on Stiles's chest as he started tracing patterns on his chest.
"I miss that sound, the sound that would chase my fears away, the beautiful tempo that has the strange ability to put me to sleep, the sweet sound that allowed me to know that you were safe and alive but most important real sling,"
Derek's gaze never left Stiles's as he told him why he missed his hearing the most.
He could see his eyes swelling up with tears, before he could say anything Stiles crashed his lips against Derek as he kissed him with everything he had.
Derek kissed back as he cupped Stiles's face and kissed him back. He could taste a few of Stiles's tears in their kiss but at the moment he ignored it as he stroke Stiles's tongue with his own.
When they pulled back Derek rested his head against Stiles who was panting for breath.
"That...was the sweetest...thing anyone has ever said to me," he said as he wrapped his arms around Derek who wrapped his own around Stiles's waist.
Derek chuckled as he pulled back and said,
"I mean it though, I miss listening to the sound of your beautiful heart,"
"Not as much as you enjoy listening to the sound of my lovely voice," Stiles said in a teasing matter.
Derek rolled his eyes,
"Oh yes, what would I ever do without that lovely sound of yours," he replied sarcastically.
Stiles just kissed cheek.
"Derek, you know we are gonna find a way to fix this right?"
"I do Stiles, if there is anyone I trust is you,"
Stiles couldn't help but smile, knowing that Derek trusted him always made his heart swell with joy. He knew that Derek meant it when he said he missed the sound of his heart, and was use to hearing it from a distance but maybe he can help find another way to listen to it, and be closer to Stiles.
Stiles grabbed Derek and lean back so that he was lying on the bed.
Derek followed Stiles as the human laid down on the bed and placed his head on his chest.
Derek blinked and was about to ask what he was doing when he heard the sound of Stiles's heart.
"I know your use to hearing it from a distance but why not try hearing it this way, plus this way you and I are closer then we are when your listening to it,"
Derek couldn't help but smile as he heard the rhythm of Stiles's heartbeat. The steady beat that allowed Derek to know that he was real, that he was alive and well.
He turned his head and placed a gentle kiss on his chest,
"I love you,"
Stiles smiled as he continued to run his fingers through Derek's hair he lean down and placed a kiss ontop of his head.
"I love you too,"
Derek smiled as he grabbed Stiles's hand and placed it on his chest so that his mate felt the rhythm of his heart and how it only beat for Stiles and only Stiles.
The two smiled as they both felt the steady beat of their lover's heart as they slowly drifted to slumber at the sound of their favorite lullaby.
Epilogue:
Stiles couldn't sleep, no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't. Every time he closed his eyes he could see the berserker stabbing Derek, images of Derek almost dying flashed his mind. He also had to try and stay calm so that he wouldn't disrupt Derek's sleep. The wolf was finally able to sleep peacefully and Stiles was not about to ruin that.
He hated knowing he came close to losing Derek, that he almost died! He closed his eyes as he rested his head on Derek's chest, he slowly took a deep breath as he heard the thumping sound of his heart.
He blinked as he heard the steady beat of the organ that Stiles swore to protect. He turned his head to see Derek's face that was relax and at peace.
Now he understood why Derek loved the sound of his heart and why he told him it allowed him to know that he was safe, alive, and real,
Because his heart allowed him to know that he was still breathing, that he wasn't some figment of his imagination or a dream his subconscious created for him. By hearing his heart, Stiles knew that Derek was really here and wasn't going anywhere. With a small smile Stiles placed a kiss on his chest right were his heart was, Stiles then rested his head on top of Derek's chest so that he could rest at the sound of Derek's beating heart with the knowledge that he was safe and alive.
