okay i’ve been thinking about how to best share my thoughts on this, and i’m gonna need everyone here, no matter your current opinion on it, to put on your thinking caps, hear me out & do a bit of self-reflection because there’s some nuance not only to the sophie thing but to a lot of the stuff i’ve seen going around on twitter and how the situation is being treated!!
↑ first of all, to go through this chronologically: i don’t think her going to tel aviv for the book thief promo when she was a child is reason enough to call her a zionist. the fault here is entirely with the management/her parents/whoever was responsible for sending her there without doing their research. as unfortunate as it is, i don’t think most of us would have known much about it at that age (me personally, i was never taught about palestine in school at all which, given the fact that my government is still in support of israel to this day, isn’t much of a surprise, but it still sucks that this isn’t talked about). plus, her twitter account at the time could very well have been managed by her parents. as a child actor, chances are she was just doing what she was told and going where she was sent, and while it’s disappointing that nobody responsible for her had any objections, i don’t think that should be our main focus here, especially because it takes attention away from the much more serious issues i’ve seen brought up!!
↑ now what i find much more concerning & worth of criticism is this.
i really, truly cannot be bothered watching a video with that title, however, i’ve seen people analyze everything from her body language to the fact that she doesn’t verbally agree with any of what is being said about israel in it. and while all of that could be true, at the end of the day, sophie was okay with her face and her name being used right beside that title. i find it weird the lengths some of you guys will go to to excuse that, as if she wasn’t well within her right to either disagree with it at the time or (if this was just her being polite), use her social media later on and clarify that she either wasn’t aware they were going to use that title or that she doesn’t stand with what was being said. sophie aside, i want you guys to imagine this happened to you: participating in an interview about a holocaust movie you were a part of, only for them to turn it into zionist propaganda. if you’re pro palestine, would you not want to distance yourself from that? and would you not want to speak up and make sure people know that you do not stand behind this in any way, shape, or form?
i have heard some more about another film festival sophie attended in 2024 (not the one from when she was a child mentioned above) that took place in america but was, according to the people who have mentioned it, very openly pro-israel, to promote that movie she was in that was based on a play written by an idf soldier. i will say that i simply don’t know enough about that to confidently say more, but please (as always!!) tell me if that is wrong or if you know more.
now, i absolutely see why certain fans have become very defensive because this was brought up at least partially by people from the heated rivalry fandom & hudson stans, as if there isn’t a situation of its own going on with him as we speak. and while i do think that deserves to be addressed as well, i find it disingenuous to advocacy for palestine to get so hooked on who’s speaking on your favorites as if those aren’t allegations that should be taken seriously either way. yes, this call might be coming from inside the house, but perhaps the lesson we should learn from this isn’t ‘sophie is entirely innocent because hudson has some shit going on as well,’ but rather not to put any celebrity on a pedestal and instead demand accountability, rather than turning it into morality olympics over who’s the better person?? at the end of the day, that only brings us back to square one, which is weird, parasocial behavior.
and, on that note, i also find it really interesting that not nearly as many of you will jump to other cast members’ defense like this. you didn’t go, ‘oh, but jasmin used her platform for….’ when she proceeded to do scream 7 (was it scream 7? my bad, guys, i haven’t watched any of the movies). and for obvious reasons bc one thing does not cancel out the other!! willingly working with people who have previously fired cast & crew over their stance on palestine, even if you have spoken about it before, IS weird. allowing your face to be used in an interview titled ‘why christians should support israel,’ even if you didn’t personally say those exact words and even if you mentioned gaza elsewhere, IS weird. what i don’t understand is why some of you are willing to acknowledge that logic when it comes to certain cast members, but suddenly abandon it when it comes to sophie!! no one is trying to cancel her, but demanding accountability after all of that, without her once using her actual platform (as in: social media posts/stories) beyond that single interview snippet, is valid to me. yes, sophie mentioned gaza in an interview. jasmin did too, (i’m using her as an example because she’s part of the yellowjackets cast, but plenty of other celebrities who have done similar things also come to mind, which only speaks for my earlier point not to act as if these people are above criticism), yet i never saw people arguing that those things automatically exempted her from criticism for other choices she made. again: for obvious reasons.
since sophie saw the comments calling her out for her chatgpt use and took the post down, she will probably see the current comments as well, even if she isn’t on twitter to see the discourse happening there, and that means she has a chance to make her stance clear. again, if this were happening to me, i would want to publicly distance myself & do everything i could to avoid being associated with some ‘why christians should support israel’ bullshit. at the end of the day, she’s a grown woman and can decide for herself how, or if, she wants to address any of this. i just want those of you rushing to defend her to ask yourselves whether you’d be putting this much effort into excusing her actions if they were coming from someone you didn’t stan 😭😭
