I liked Sid. He was a decent sort, even if he did get a bit carried away with things. He had great fashion sense – not always exactly my style, but he had these great clothes even when it wasn't Malcolm tellin' him what to wear – and that's how I met him, wantin' one of his jackets off him. I was in the 101ers then, and after that I squatted together with him and a load of our other mates, so I've known Sid longer than almost anyone, even my mates from The Clash.
I'll tell you something no one ever says about Sid. He was always thinkin', at least at first. He really was clever, always talkin' about things the rest of us hardly understood. Then he got into some things he shouldn't have and he stopped thinkin' so much, but I reckon a lot of people have got the wrong idea about Sid. He was really sweet, too, when he was hangin' around with us. Lovely fellow.
I dunno about Nancy. She really loved him, but I reckon she got him into all sorts of trouble he wouldn't have been in on his own. Sid always did choose his mates a little too easily and trust 'em a little too much, and that was true with Nancy more than anyone. He stopped spendin' time with us and with Johnny and his band, and you can't do that. You can't count on just one person and leave behind all your other mates, and that's the mistake Sid made. It ain't wrong to want to be with the person you love, but you got to remember your other mates as well, and your family, anyone else that loves you.
But I won't let anyone be too hard on Sid. He was a beautiful fellow, and if he got into more trouble than he could handle, that don't make him any less decent, in the end. It just means you got to remember where he went wrong, try not to make any of the same mistakes, and look out for yourself and your mates.
